besides the two teams that were in the grand final the year before, do any of the teams in the SANFL have somekind of traditional game for anzac day (like the collingwood magpies playing the bombers at the MCG every year since the mid 1990's).

No. In the SANFL we don't need to manufacture traditions from thin air, because we do not need to pander to Victorians who think the game exists only within Melbourne, nor to television stations and sponsors who need to make money on long weekends. For this reason we only have the ANZAC day Grand Final rematch; a game in which a place must be earned, rather than granted year-in-year-out regardless of merit.

I think that it started in the 1950s. I can remember North playing Norwood as the two grand finalists from the previous year in 1961. In the mid 1980s the SANFL tried to end the tradition and for a few years it didn't continue, but it resumed in the early 1990s.

Not sure... the ANZAC day Football Budget has sometimes published a list of previous ANZAC day clashes. Old budgets might be downloadable from the SANFL website?

I don't know that the tradition has been upheld every year either. Reckon it might have been done in the old days, then stopped, then brought back late 80s/early 90s. I remember going to see Glenelg v North at Adelaide Oval in 1986 and am fairly sure that that was not ANZAC day.

Yes, for some reason North vs Glenelg never played an Anzac Day game in 1986-87-88. Certainly up until then the reigning premiers had played every year on Anzac Day. In 1980, reigning Grand Finalists Port played South at Football Park, whilst Torrens played Glenelg at Adelaide.

I'm looking at an old budget which says the first GF rematch on Anzac Day was 1948 - Norwood beat West. After that, the next GF rematch on Anzac Day was 1954, and it was held most years until 1985. A GF rematch was held on Anzac Day a couple of time between then and 1997. A rematch has been held every year since '98 except 2000. Certainly in the years without one, there has always been a match on Anzac Day. There were often multiple matches on Anzac Day as well I think, including a couple of double-headers in the 80s.

The Grand Final rematch IS the tradition we do not need to make a new traditional clash.

^ this, although I wouldn't mind if they scheduled another game or two on Anzac Day as well. Good for crowds etc., but not the same teams every year.

I like the fact that the ANZAC Day honour is earned.

With the 2014 ANZAC Day falling on a Friday and 2015 on a Saturday there may be extra games played as part of normal schedulling.

Well the way the AFL Reserves issue is shaping up the SANFL will most likely cave in and allow the Crows and Power Reserves to be the featured game on ANZAC Day!

Yet we appear OK with pandering to 1 of our own State's Clubs & move away from a perfectly good 55,000 seat stadium & destroy the BEST Cricket Ground on the Planet plus potentially destroy our OWN competition by considering AFL Reserves Teams in it. ANZAC Day will end up the domain of the AFL because we won't have a viable competition to warrant attending.

Thank John Olsen

Apathy like that is what they are banking on.
What did you do in 1990 when WTFC were on the brink, "build a bridge"?
Pfft...

I agree LEH - the AFL Reserves is the biggest issue since 1990 and only a fool would make a statement deriding those who want to keep it in the spotlight.

So it was a GF rematch, then it wasn't, then it was, then it wasn't again and now it is.

Hmmmph. Sounds a bit "manufactured" to me. But then again, rightly or wrongly Pseudo never misses an opportunity to bring Victoria into any discussion. For all the hate, I dont know anyone who brings them into the debate more often.

Well, he's wrong. For this isn't the case as you can see from above. It has been, then it hasn't been etc etc
