Night Footy

Postby eaglehaslanded » Wed Aug 14, 2013 12:16 pm

Just having a look back at this season's draw and the night fixtures. It's interesting to see a huge discrepancy between some clubs and how much or how little they've been drawn to play at night. There has been 19 night games scheduled to be played this year. Below is table of how many games each club would have played.

CLUB GAMES

NORWOOD 8 (5)
GLENELG 7 (4)
SOUTH 5 (4)
WEST 5 (4)
CENTRAL 4 (2)
NORTH 3
PORT 3
STURT 2
EAGLES 1

Why is it for example that Sturt only play 2 games, while Eagles play 1 but Norwood are drawn 8 times. I understand every club doesn't have a venue that's capable for night footy but surely there could be a bit more of an even spread of games.

Spend a vast amount of money on lights then.

Or are your club saving it to buy Ravens jumpers to give away at the last game?

I did mention that not all clubs have grounds capable of hosting night games. Take this for am example - West play Eagles twice at City Mazda this season, why couldn't one of those games been scheduled as a night fixture?

Depends what the clubs asked for.
Each club would have a list of requests for the program.
Generally, for clubs with good lights, they want night games early and late in the season.

If my club didnt have lights I dont think I would want to play against a team that plays plenty of night footy. I would say most of West night games have been against those that also play under lights

Except against South, who haven't won a home night match since early 2011.

The Eagles need to play more night games at Thebarton to draw some decent home crowds. The game we had there against Port last year, despite the weather being bad, was easily the biggest crowd we had for the season.

Totally agree about Thebarton but the SAAFL run that now and why would WWT pay rent when their home ground costs nothing ?
I remember a few years back pre Bassett when Norwood appeared sick of night games and had most of their good wins during the day. In contrast, to the visitors a night game was something different and they relished the opportunity.
Night games should only be played early and late season, no good playing a blockbuster in June in pouring rain.

I did enjoy at the last Glenelg/ Eagles game on a Sunday afternoon, when it got dark due to rain and weather, that when the lights were switched on in the 3rd quarter, the Eagles supporters all give a Bronx cheer. Out of curiosity, what would have happened at Woodville, Would we have just sat there and looked at the darkness?

Are you ******* serious?

Lucky Centrals never spent the money upgrading their lights. Would of been a waste.

I bet they demand to play at night. Reckon they'd love to spread their cancerous brand all over Glenelg or Norwood oval on a night fixture.
