I'm hearing lots of talk about Ken McGregor and wondering what Port fans think of him as a coach. Or anyone else for that matter. Would like to see him get another gig as he didn't get much time to do much at Port but did he really improve Port that much?

Supposedly interviewed very well for the West Adelaide job?

As a diehard magpie man, I think he didn't exceptional job in the most difficult of circumstances. My respect levels for him only increased when he walked out of a meeting with a few PAFC officials last week as he is furious over the direction the club is taking. Good on him I say for standing up for what he believes in.

Also supposedly, Tyson Edwards will be replacing McGregor as the coach of the Power reserves.

Since you're no longer a Port man, that would be Collingwood Magpies right?

And I thought Ken did a fair job given the recruiting hand he was dealt. I'll reserve judgement on McGregor's position when I find out more about what club direction he disagreed with. Maybe he was siding with B&W and wanted the PAFC to simply concentrate on $ANFL success.

McGregor started off very poorly, terrible game plan early on, but by mid season he had us playing a better brand of footy. Wasn't a bad coach, wasn't a great coach.

No doubt if if the whole reserves saga wasn't floating around, which undoubtedly played on everyone's mind, Kenny would of had a much better win/loss record.

Good call. A bit of a unique situation. Ken could definitely bring some good players with him and would add another dimension to him being selected as head coach of another SANFL club. Provided of course that he had a good relationship with the players - which you would expect so - he is a genuine good bloke.

Just on that, will a transfer fee need to be paid for any Magpie players moving to other clubs? Wouldn't think there should be because they have no choice but to leave.

Good case for it not to be paid.

Remember a reference to 50% of transfer fees somewhere along the line but who knows.

I thought he left the SANFL when Centrals dropped out a couple of weeks back?

On McGregor, I think he showed a tendancy to try and play a style of play our players didn't have either the skills or fitness to execute.

In the back half we played posession football, then like AFL sides do quick transition to score "out the back". That could also be on the back of a slim forward line. Thurgood played as a KPP while Hayes barely got on the park and Mercer left for the Barossa while Cockshell spent time in the reserves meaning we had to Mieklejohn or Cockshell resting forward.Perhaps game style reflected the cattle he had.

I know they players did little conditioning work during the mid part of the year and it showed, several games we lost simply because we ran out of legs in the second half of the game. West, Eagles and Sturt losses in the last 6 weeks were a reflection of that. I'd say Ken and his assistants would have to have learnt from that.

Do I think he is a league level coach? Yes, I do. I think he'll get another crack somewhere else.

In Kenny's defence Boon, He was appointed very late IIRC and the Squad had begun Preseason without a head coach appointed. Think it was round 2 v Sturt at Norwood Oval you could see glimpses of how Kenny wanted them to play but correct they struggled to execute properly. Would have been interesting if this AFL bullshit didn't rear its ugly head up what he would have done next season.

I agree with Booney's assessment in the main. The difference between Port in round 1 and 10 weeks later was chalk and cheese, so IMHO he can definitely coach. And IMHO we'll see him bring that across to the Bays from 2014.

Glenelg are looking for a part time coach and kenny fits that mould
