Mmmm develop our own players is what we're best at. We've just had another 4 players drafted to AFL level. Recently been recognised at a national level for our junior development programme.

But some still believe developing our own is something we don't do, or don't do well.

Yep. Missed the mark there Jim. Eagles recruit heavily every year to cover the players they inevitably lose in the draft.

Who is that?

Jacob has played 35 games at league level for Central District. Apparently can play forward or back. Maybe some dogs supporters could shed further light.

Handy reserves player.

Can play forward or back with about the same usefulness.

Disappointing, thought he could have had a break out year next year. I thought he should have played the last final instead of reichart. He was developing well and as jim said, can play in attack or defence. The club wouldnt be happy, he was a required player and allegedly told them one thing and then "back flipped" and signed with the eagles.

As do other clubs but the Eagles seem to raid other SANFL clubs more than most. Other clubs tend to look more at interstate players rather than pilfer from the SANFL

Smart move IMO. Better of recruiting an Ainger or Wundke as opposed to someone who you really dont know from the VFL/WAFL etc.

Shows they must do something right if players are willing to move across to them.

I'i back Jim up, they are good at producing 18s that get noticed and drafted, not so good at producing long term AFL and SANFL league footballers.
I'm still waiting on that list of players that have ended up on the AFL scrap heap from the Eagles this millenium, must be quite a list, it's taking a while to compile ;)

Of course it would be a long list, it would be in direct relation to the amount of players they have drafted.

Not sure why I compiled the list seeing as though you're the one making the claim, but here you go, the first ten drafts of the millennium:

Add Byron Sumner and Christian Bock to that list and I can't think of too many others who have failed to have at least some impact.
Polec probably is one who hasn't lived up to his reputation yet, players like Sutcliffe and Redden have shown enough to suggest they have lived up to what was expected of them, ie solid but not superstars.

Add Rob Shirley, Rhett Biglands, Andrew Crowell, Justin Cicollela, Ken McGregor, Brett Burton, Matthew Pavlich to the list above. Maybe just outside the time frame youe aluding to days, but when a club has so many draftees, you'd expect that not all would establish themselves at the top level.

By the way, the fact that all these guys got drafted is a credit to the Eagles. The fact that such a proportion did not become established AFL players, well thats the responsibility of the AFL clubs that drafted them as they clearly weren't able to get the best out of them. Not sure how the Eagles can be held to account for that!!

what would westys list look like they have had plenty drafted over the 2000s ? Norwoods list would be good over the past few years but would take a bit more time to judge .

Agree twe. When that story first came out, I thought Westies would have been the leader, in SA at least.

From that list i'd give 6 a definite pass mark and am prepared to include Broadbent and possibly Redden of the under 100 gamers leaving 11 that didnt cut it making it about 30-40% go onto play 100 AFL games How does this compare to the average across the AFL?
The disappointing thing is the amount that are never heard from again after falling off AFL lists that dont even have a career at SANFL level, which was/is the point im trying to make.
The eagles are good at making kids standout but the amount that are never heard from again is abnormally high i would think.

I count 3 out of 19 that haven't had a career at SANFL level. Feel free to post equivalent stats for other SANFL clubs.

Three more I can think of being Glenn Dawson, Jarrod Harding and Josh Growden that didn't make an impact on the AFL. Growden, I believe, had a badly broken leg in his first year at GWS.
Most players seem to return to the Eagles to at least give it a crack. Jarrad Wright was cut down by injuries, Bock stayed for a couple of years but wasn't up to it, Thompson unfortunately went nowhere and jury is still out on Dawson and Harding but signs not great. Not sure what Growden's plans are.
I'd suspect that percentage-wise it's not real difference to any other club.
Sometimes it actually makes me wonder what the recruiters see in some players in the first place.
