Agree unfortunately, unless the figures spiral down alarmingly and quickly. Not unless the AFL decide to introduce a national reserves competition will things change. They are currently looking at "talent pathways", although unfortunately I bet the "State League Model" is the thing they'll stick with.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-05-12/t ... reage-move

My thoughts, which I think I've put on here before:

- AFL introduce national Reserves Competition.
- Scrap Rookie List, Keep 38 on Senior List, 2 Spots for Mature State League Players (so the carrot dangles), 18 Spots for Academy List.
- Align AFL Clubs with Under 18 and State League Clubs for purpose of filling Academy List (i.e. Port have WWT,NA,CD,WA and Crows have NWD,GL,SA,ST).
- Academy List to be Under 20 (i.e. the 2 years after U18 football).
- Essentially like an Apprenticeship and once they turn 21 they either get upgraded to AFL Senior List or continue on with State League Club, who they would continue to play with if they don't get selected in AFL Reserves side.

I think this would benefit everyone, at least more so than the current situation.

Save money by scrapping NEAFL and return to State Leagues. Scrap Foxtel Cup and potentially transfer sponsorship to Reserves Comp. AFL would be investing in football at all levels if done properly.

the NEAFL could become the model for how the national reserves works though.

Have to agree (maybe not never, but not in the forseeable future).

The AFL clubs want their reserves teams, and they have them in state leagues, so the AFL has what it wants .. Why would they go to the great deal of cost and eat into their own profits to establish its own reserves comp??

Exactly, stuck with it now.
Will definately be some adjustments to the rules next year though, several clubs will kick up a stink

What, like calling Port "the Power", there is no Magpies anymore ffs!
Give them a limit of 12 professional players per game against SANFL clubs, otherwise f--- off to the ammo's!

I think a cap of 12 AFL players per game is a start, also all top up players must be under 23. I think all SANFL clubs and the majority of supporters would be happy with those 2 changes

Your suggestion Jim would make it fairer, but it's still messing with it too much. Having rules about age limits, caps on professionals etc. makes the whole thing artificial. IMO it would be better if they were consigned to the Sanfl reserves.

Indeed. The decision does not need to be reversed. At some point in the future the capricious AFL clubs may believe that having reserves teams in the SANFL is no longer of benefit. If and when this happens, they'll simply pull up stumps and clear out, regardless of any agreement they may have with the SANFL. I think this scenario is far more likely than the SANFL clubs growing a pair and kicking the interlopers out.

To some point it would also hurt the SANFL. Having a reserves comp will mean having a bigger lists. Those extra players are going to be more young kids being drafted. With country footy spending big $$$ and more kids getting a AFL contract, were does that leave the SANFL to get players. If the standard of footy starts to drop down to ammo's country level do you think it will attract crowds. Especially when it's cheaper or free to watch.

Things will change , considering Port are wanting things to stay as it is now with their zones etc.Clubs are aware of this and are not happy.

I thought it was reviewed after 12 months ? If true the clubs are in the box seat IMO .

I think there will be changes to the Port model, but they will occur incrementally. IMHO anyone expecting wholesale changes next season is in for a rude surprise.

If port were also down the bottom like the crows I suspect this thread would be a whole lot shorter...

More than likely, but for mine it doesn't change the point that the competition now has 3 different sets of rules among the clubs, different Salary Cap and an inequitable draw. I try not to get drawn into the debate because it aint changing in a hurry, so no point banging on about it.
