It is actually quite logical and one of the main points I kept arguing last year. The farce comes from the VARIANCE in performances from the AFL reserves teams. There will almost certainly be weeks when they lose by 20 goals and weeks when they will win by 20 goals, all hugely dependent on
- their injury lists
- their desire to play to win (which will depend on what suits their AFL masters from week to week)
- the rules/concessions that the SANFL gives each AFL club

It truly does reduce the competition to a farce - it is hard to get excited by wins, or despondent by losses against the AFL Reserves sides when the whole structure of these clubs is completely different and any close games are just a fluke by the clubs having the "right" balance of injuries and top up players on that day.

Can anyone who was at the game tell us roughly what percentage of the crowd were wearing Power gear?

I can tell you it has 0% of **** all to do with anything. That help?
Keep your hair on, just interested in who goes out to support the Port Power reserves.

Well there was 2758 at the game and the majority were supporting Port Adelaide. How you break that up to satisfy whatever it is you're after is up to you.

so what changed in a week when port went down to norwood? the personnel in the power side didnt change that much, and as far as i know its not as if the maggies had half a dozen players returning from injury either.

it is pretty clear that the issue was a horrible performance by glenelg rather than port being this unstoppable team.

just on that, when was the last time a team lost by 150 points in the SANFL? maybe sturt 15 years ago when they were bottom every year? shit, that might have even been 20 years ago. im getting old.

A thrashing like that is obviously due to a mixture of one team being good and the other being poor, and time will tell how much of a factor each was, you can't say for certain one way or the other yet!

Also the round 1 vs round 2 circumstances were the extreme opposite for Port.
R1 they played the premiers away
R2 they played the wooden spooners (with a very weak team on paper) at home

But it obviously isn't a complete coincidence that Glenelg's biggest ever loss was in the first ever game they played for premiership points against an AFL Reserves team.

Was that really Glenelg's biggest ever loss?

That's great news. Add that to the Grand Final pain inflicted over the years and you blokes must love us!

I think you'll find Sydney stole it from Port....

Drawing that figure to Alberton, hosting Glenelg, can only be "broken up" in so many ways. Whether Port fans were the majority there (as they should be) or not.

The question of a breakdown of 'Magpie' supporters and Power supporters is a very valid one as many 'Magpie' supporters have traditionally followed Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Carlton etc in the AFL/ VFL. Many haven't changed from that with the advent of a Port AFL franchise. So if there were hardly anyone with solely 'Magpies' clobber on you'd guess they've walked away from being lied to by those running the AFL franchise and that their SANFL club has been pimped out for other needs considered to be more important.
I had this very conversation with a Magpies supporter (who followed Essendon in the AFL) last year at the Sturt game at alberton. He was gutted and wasn't sure what he'd do this year.

There was a bit of a connection between Port and South Melbourne and I think they played each other in a pre season game in about 1970, so that might be when South told Port they could use theirs.

My 71 year old Mother thinks it was Bob McLean who adopted it after South Melbourne began using it in '61. She thinks about 63/64.

Although, it would be difficult trying to differentiate one premiership from the other in that period.
