West Adelaide Financial Situation

Released by the Bloods this afternoon...

RADIO REPORT CLARIFICATION

Last weekend there was a report on radio suggesting that the West Adelaide Football Club was in serious financial trouble. This is totally incorrect.

The reality is that the Club owns its clubrooms and the land it occupies. This is a significant asset and underpins the Club's financial position.

Over the past 3 years, we have reduced expenditure significantly (in the vicinity of $450,000 plus) and have taken steps to improve revenue streams by leasing the first floor area to Billiards and Snooker SA.

We have also streamlined the Function Centre operation to return a small profit in 2016 and improved Gaming performance, which is showing a slight increase in trading in 2016 compared with 2015.

Our only non-current liability is to the Westies Wolfpack Unit Trust, a group of passionate Board members and supporters who have a long-term commitment to our club.

As with other clubs, we do suffer seasonal cash flow difficulties and this can become significant towards the end of the year. However, we have always and will continue to meet our commitments.

Our budget, showing a profit for 2017, has been recently submitted to the SANFL, who have reviewed and accepted it.

The Club will continue to work to improve its performance, but the steps we have already taken have meant there is no current threat to the financial viability of the West Adelaide Football Club and we are extremely confident of our future.

John Kantilaftas - CEO

Why shouldn't he be.

If someone started reporting false rumours on the radio that my business was in serious financial trouble, and it wasn't, then I'd damn well defend it too.

You of all people in your line of work should know the damage caused to companies through these kind of rumours.

I think it can cause more problems if you start responding to every rumour, just get on with the job and rumours will cease.

I agree. You don't give something that's unworthy of your attention a chance to grow greater legs.
Look at other, more subtle ways, to counter the issue. Look at your own messaging, not the messaging that others wish to portray.

Must admit I wasn't aware of any rumours and now I can't but help feel something is wrong.

Not at all. It's not whether you manage it that's the question, it's how you manage it.

I can't blame Kantilaftas for coming out and fending for his club.

I'm not sure which radio outlet produced the rumour in the first place, (I can hazard an educated guess, mind you), but given the pro-AFL and largely corresponding anti-SANFL sentiment that pervades the airwaves in this state I think it's a good thing, and obliged to get on the front foot to set the record straight. In fact, I'd go as far as saying he should've called up the station in question and put the facts to back to them, in a measured, calm, and professional manner. As DW says, it's about how you deliver the message.

Whilst you're always going to appear defensive when responding to an allegation, I thought the tone was appropriate and professional, and what you'd expect from a CEO.

Terrific fellow, David Grenvold. Was very impressive in a coaching role at Sturt a while ago. A very good appointment for West Adelaide.

Wonder if Eagles could hire him part time to do some recruiting for us, anything would be better than what's going on currently

Poor form Dutchy, Lee's putting his hand up and doing the hard yards for his club.

Despite his prior history on here he needs to be congratulated for the role he is playing in helping to turn Westies around.

Hear hear.

He's continued to support and help administrate his club to help them be better on and off field. Any criticism of him is, at best, bullshit, at worst it's childish and completely uncalled for.

But if there was no childish behavior the traffic in this site would half!

You must have missed the ;) at the end there......agree with everything said above, not an easy role to take on in a voluntary capacity and good on him.
