Phil Herden's predictions on RPH tonight.

Postby sturtpeter » Fri Sep 29, 2006 12:07 am

I greatly respect Phil and his passion and work he's done for our beloved Comp, however, I feel I need to voice my immense disapproval at his predictions on tonight's show.

How can anyone predict positions for 2007 without knowing in detail the off-season recruitments, Coach, financial situation etc?

You are an ambassador for the SANFL and as one of your Club Reporters I only have the greatest admiration for your passion, but, in all seriousness, Phil, your credibility dropped tonight.

You don't know who Sturt have in mind who Sturt will appoint: you don't know how well we will recruit and finally, I wish you luck at South Adelaide, because, IMHO they have got off lightly given their abuse of the Salary Cap and the integrity abusing such involves.

I suppose each to their opinion, but Phil would have been basing his tip on current status for each club. I don't really see the harm in taking a punt on what the ladder will look like next season.

Make's for interesting listening, especially the fact Phil is a well respected personality in our football community.

By the sounds of this, if he said Sturt would have finished in the 5, you'd be happy and wouldn't have posted such a rant.

I didn't hear what he said, but no sane person could put Sturt anywhere but on the bottom, about 5 games behind anyone else.

Phil Herden's predictions on RPH tonight.

Postby sturtpeter » Fri Sep 29, 2006 1:21 am

Wrong!

I am not saying we won't finish bottom, but, until the Coach is announced and recruits are finalised etc it's impossible to predict anything.

The idea Paul Blandis has regarding the Summer Show is admirable.

Wait until all appointments are finalised before making ridiculous predictions, please.

Remember, in 1964 the King did the impossible and brought the Panthers up from bottom to top.

Footy's a strange game without knowing the final complexities of players etc.

It's impossible to predict anything anyway, so from now on, predicting is outlawed!

Your credibility just dropped below zero....nothing worng with having an opinion on what may occur next year, its all good stuff that creates discussion about the comp. IMO you can have a reasonable idea based on who you will lose to the draft, who you may gain back from the AFL, the financial status of the club, who is contracted for next year, if they have a coach in place to recruit players at this critical part of the year (Glenelg have suffered with this and no doubt Sturt will) etc etc

Sturtpeter sounds a bit touchy!! Nothing wrong with Phil H having an opinion. Before the new season or even after the old season has finished most of us have a prediction, is that wrong too?

Im guessing he tipped Sturt for the spoon, they would be my tip as well. They were terrible this year, Westies put up far more of a fight when i watched them while Sturt were woeful.

Hi Sturt Peter

Between Smithy & myself we had two hours of SANFL to discuss between last night & this morning.

We decided that for a good filler we could review each teams efforts in 2006.

This oppossed to repeating the same stuff

We started with West and the question, without notice, was asked of me where do you think the Bloods will finish in 2007?

An easy option would have been not answer the question. Pretty boring for the listeners

Another easy option would have been to talk about how each team was bound to improve in 2007, as some other experts might, however it is a mathematical impossibility.

However I had an opinion with some reasoning behind it so I gave it.

For the record my reasoning is as follows ; (all my opinions)

- despite not winning the wooden spoon, Sturt finished the season as the worst team in the league

- as at today, they are the only club without a coach. When appointed their plans for 2007 will be at least a month behind all the other non-finals coaches

- financially it will take at least another year before funds from the gaming venues cover set up costs & enable the club to successfully compete for the recuits needed to see a dramatic improvement.

- their list has some 100+ game players of which some currently considering retiring, a lot of kids with 3-20 games experience and not much in between.

So if I had to predict which team as at today most likely would finish last in 2007 logic indicates it would be Sturt.

I am quite prepared to be proved wrong and I am sure that some of my predictions for other teams will prove that way as the year plays out.

If you would like some comfort from this predication please note in March that I tipped South to finish last in 2006. ...... I'll leave you to appreciate that irony.

Geez, Im just glad I picked Glenelg to be bottom and not Sturt at the start of the year so I didn't cop the wrath of sp.

Keep up the great work Phil.

On a slightly related Phil, (or others) what's going to happen next year without Phil's contribution in the media re the SANFL such as the stats, RPH, the Messenger and countless other projects??

It might be one step forard for South but a big step backward for the SANFL.

Wedgie all it will take is someone with a little initiative to see an opportunity and take over.....

I'm sure Phil could help.

I actually wish I lived in the city, as I could see it being a perfect opportunity to get involved with promoting something I love.

Living here, and with all the other things I have going on at the moment, I think the missus would kill me if I took something like that on from afar.

Anyone here coming to Hand Picked???? ;)

Phil Herden's predictions on RPH tonight

Postby sturtpeter » Sat Sep 30, 2006 2:08 pm

Hi Phil,

I am sorry if I sounded offensive but the prediction is rather premature

A fortnight before the end of the Minor Round I would have agreed we were the worst side in the SANFL and deserved the Spoon, however, we gave Norwood an almighty scare at the Adelaide Oval on 01-09 and but for some bewildering Umpiring before half-time should have been 4-5 goals up. Chambers' inaccurate kicking for goal didn't help either.

When the 3/4 time Siren rang at the Playground we were only 14 points down against the side then favourite to win the Premiership before a goal after the siren gave your beloved Eagles a 20 point margin.

West Adelaide were unable to beat us in two attempts the 2nd of which was played on their hallowed turf at Richmond against a severely depleted Sturt team. Both of our victories against West were by margins in excess of 8 goals.

When we lost those games by over or about 100 points the side lacked discipline, knew Sticks was going or gone and had no hope of playing Finals' Footy. Injury decimated us all year. Feasty was in and out with his chronic leg problems, ditto Nelson and Whiteman.

We will more than likely lose Simon although this will be announced at our B & F on 20-10-06. One of our prime recruits, Steve Perri suffered a season ending shoulder injury early so he will be a welcome addition in 2007. Michael Bratton showed good signs until he injured his hand.

Nelson and Weatherald should play on to assist our promising juniours. Sean O'Keefe took time to adjust to the tempo of SANFL but those two games he played at Adelaide Oval and Broadspectrum were beauties. It'd be great if we could obtain the services of his great mate Kennedy again in 2007.

Ben Colreavy fought injury all year and he's a class act when 100% right.

James McLeay had a frustrating season due to early injury problems but he too oozes talent. Michael Coad is a great player but again suffered injury woes throughout 2006. Luke Jarjoura needs the right mentor and he could be a SANFL Champion. Luke Button shows promise up forward and if not taken in the draft can help Chambo and Co in the Forward line.

Having Barney French back at Oxford Terrace is a priority. If he has the right attitude to play SANFL again he MUST return to Sturt. Not South or Central, STURT :x

Angas Kurtze is a developing Ruckman and with DeLuca likely to play more with the Power in 2007, a French, Kurtze Rucking Combination wouldn't be the worst going around in the SANFL.

Once our strength, our backline remains our weakest point. Gone are Chaplin, Smith etc. We must recruit a solid CHB, tall Forward, one midfielder to go with Sheedy, Colreavy, etc and a Ruckman if French doesn't want to play SANFL.

I think I've covered most bases there.

I wish you an outstanding career at SA, Phil. You epitomise a quality person and a dedicated loyal SANFL person. A bit like me lol (just joking)

To your wife and young family all the very best.

You're a lucky guy :)
