----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clubs are beginning to learn the finer details of this year's mid-season draft, which is expected to fall after round 11.

AFL.com.au understands clubs have recently received information from the League explaining that the mid-season draft, the AFL's first since 1993, will be held the week of June 3 – just prior to the bye rounds commencing.

Seven clubs currently have list spots available and will subsequently be able to take part in the draft. Carlton is the only club with multiple spots available with three vacancies.

However, clubs can still have spots open up on their list should a player succumb to either a long-term injury or prematurely retire from the game. There will be no deadline on when teams can open list spots prior to the mid-season draft.

Clubs can also fill their available list spots prior to March 15 by recruiting players via the AFL's newly introduced pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) rules.

It's understood players recruited during the mid-season draft will earn a contract for the remainder of the season, though they will have the option of negotiating terms for an extension at any period throughout the year.

Should a player's contract not be renewed beyond the current year – and should the player fail to be recruited to another club the following season – it's believed the player will receive a one-off payment of around $20,000.

As compensation for state league clubs who have players taken from them midway through the year, it's understood AFL clubs will be made to provide them with a reimbursement.

That could include a payment of up to 50 per cent of any sign-on bonus given to the player by their state league club.

It's believed the order of the draft will be based on the ladder positions after round 11, though a number of other ways to determine the order of draft picks have been considered.

One particular example floated was a combined ladder based off results from the last 11 matches of the previous season with the first 11 games of the current season. However, that scenario appears unlikely to eventuate.

The decision to hold a mid-season draft was finalised by the AFL Commission in October following discussions by the Competition Committee, but finer details had yet to be determined at the time.

Players eligible for the mid-season draft must have previously nominated for an AFL draft or been on an AFL club list.

So given this could be disastrous for any given clubs premiership chances, has the SANFL done anything to prevent this? Other than an average press release last year. Unless the sanfl don't care, it clearly shows the afl can do whatever they please (which I know is demonstrated every season). Yet another reason to give up on our comp.

Of course they don't. The AFL have the money, they make the rules, the SANFL is the poor (exceptionally poor) little brother. They won't make any complaints. They can't afford to.

The AFL will gladly wait until the SANFL is a complete basket case, then turn up, media entourage in toe, photos of whoever is captain of Crows and Power on the front page of the rag, some crappy headline: "AFL throws life line to SANFL!" one sentence buried deep within the story about how "certain changes will need to be made to current structure to allow AFL greater control." the rest; a wankfest about how they really care about local footy, which clearly cannot survive without the chivalrous intervention of football's wondrous governing body.

(N.B. it should read "AFL's wondrous governing body." since they renamed the game after themselves, shouldn't it be spurious to refer to it as football ?)

Not that I am aware of. The SANFL has recommended that clubs have a model that encourages business expertise. South have had this structure for about five years as has Sturt and soon West will be similar.

Chairman -
Deputy Chairman -
Marketing Director -
Finance Director -
Hospitality Director -
League Director -
Director -
Property Director

As far as I can gather and I may well be wrong, but the Westies board stood down and the SANFL appointed a committee to the select the new board.

The WAFC nominations committee was appointed by the board of the WAFC. It had on it David Shipway, John Kantilaftas and Adrian O'Dea

The board all agreed to stand down in order to allow a progression to the new model.

A quick question to anyone that knows. With Cam Sutcliffe at the Magpies and Matt Wright at the Crows as "marquis" players, do they play if the Magpies or Crows have a full compliment of players available similar the Steve Summerton scenario where he dropped to the B's?

Adelaide has 38 on the senior list and 6 rookies - 44

Port has 40 on the senior list and 4 rookies - 44

22 in the AFL side, 21 in the SANFL side, total 43.

In the event either squad has a full list to pick from there would be one player left over + the marquee player, it's unlikely I would imagine.

Having said that, last year (end of 2017) the rules were adjusted / changed to allow both Port and Adelaide to field one marquee player in their SANFL side ahead of an AFL listed player if and when they have a full compliment to select from.

Always thought the teams had the decision and there’s no league rule for the mature player.
He’s 100% SANFL club player ..??
Wonder if Eagles got a transfer fee for Sutcliffe or did we get overwhelmed again

The SANFL announced on Friday that it had changed its rule and both the Port and Crows reserves teams would be able to field one marquee contracted player – such as Summerton – in every match.

----

SANFL football general manger Adam Kelly said the original rule was introduced in the first year of fielding AFL reserves teams in the state league in 2014 to uphold the integrity of the competition.

Kelly said the former stipulation had not contemplated that all 21 AFL-listed players would be available, resulting in no top-up players lining up in a league match.

“The provisions of the licence agreement … were included to ensure that the teams of each (AFL) club were playing the line and wanting to win,” Kelly said.

“Both clubs have honoured this principle and demonstrated through their players a commitment to the contest and respect for the competition.

“Ultimately, the SANFL has agreed with Port Adelaide that it is appropriate that the marquee player be able to be selected before an AFL-listed player on the occasion that 21 are available for SANFL selection.”

Port cried when Summerton had to play in the SANFL and the SANFL jumped. That being said I do think its stupid that the captain/leadership player/Marquee player couldnt play every week in the first place. It will be better for both clubs to move to the VFL or AFL reserves comp if the bloody AFL would just put the money up instead of spending money on the AFLW.

AFL reserves would cost far more than the women and they don't get (up to) 50% of the population interested in the game. It 'aint happening.

The AFL put a lot of money into the Womans league and it would be interesting to see how much . Dont forget the indirect costs involved . The womans comp is a joke IMO. Its people too concerned about knocking the minority.
