I reckon it was more reserve games than league meant you were eligible even if the league side was knocked out.
I also remember an attitude amongst supporters, that it'd be unfair on those players who'd worked hard all year, to get their side into the finals, if they were to be replaced in the team by half the regular league side.
But sport was more like the retreat it's supposed to be, in those days.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Norwood were their own worst enemy, with uncontested turnovers and poor goal-kicking. Considering who we’ve got up forward, the ball use and lack of structure has been pathetic.

Oppositions spread and pace in the second half was just too good.

Another performance like that and Cotton should be under some serious pressure.

Actually from the 60s through to 1983 at least the only qualification was that you didn't play league in the last minor round game. In 1968 Lindsay Backman pulled out of South's league team for the last minor round game and thus could play in the Reserves finals.
In 1983 there was the ludicrous situation whereby Russell Johnston and Craig Brsdley played in the Reserves Grand Final! Johnston had missed Port's last league game of the year with injury and Bradley had been in England with the Australian under 19 cricket team.
The 3 game qualification was for AFL players who could revert to their SANFL team if they had played that number of games in the SANFL during the season.
Darel Hart, Mark Mickan and Mark Bickley all playef in the SANFL finals that year after each qualifying by playing 3 games for their SANFL club. Hart won the Jack Oatey medal and Mickan won the Crows best and fairest after playing the first 3 games of the season for West. He might have been tired by the time of the Grand Final but for the second time that season he had his colours lowered by the great Mick Redden.
