Norwood to become the latest in a series of broken and battered shells after this matchup.
The Crows are pencilling in their appointment with the Power for the last game of the year in their little book of "things to do when our real team gets knocked out early".
Glenelg, an interesting cameo to be remembered, by the few of us who'll bother, as the team that finished top of its traditional rivals.
Grand Final will be capacity with black, white, teal and the state's colours donned by people having nothing else to follow.
The media will love it.

I bloody well hope I'm wrong.

My two clubs fighting it out.

Crows by 10 goals

A Crows team that will still have 17 afl listed this week will be too strong. Come finals when crows and port can only play 16 AFL listed and their leadership player or 17 listed without they will still be too strong. Up until both clubs are knocked out of AFL. Then the full rules kick in where they can only play players who have played more SANFL than AFL and 3 games after June 30. If crows and Port make it all the way to an AFL grand final then that takes the rule right up to the SANFL prelim. As neither Crows or Port will get that far on the AFL their sides will be quite weak come finals in the SANFL.

I'm not sure about that Sib.
AFL Grand Final is a week after the SANFL Grand Final. If Port or Crows get knocked out in the Preliminary, I imagine the rules would kick in that restricts access to players in the SANFL Grand Final, the following day.
But if they were playing each other, in that scenario, it wouldn't matter.
If they were both knocked out by Saturday in week 2 of AFL finals, there would be the possibility that a SANFL side (possibly Glenelg) may earn a reprieve of playing against a weakened reserves side on the Sunday. But I'm not sure on the rules regarding how a team's selection is affected by the event of its senior side being knocked out on the same weekend that the reserves are playing.

Of course.

AFL is after the SANFL GF so Port and Crows could go all the way through picking anyone up to 17 afl players

I was told so long as the AFL sides are still alive the Crows and Power have no restriction on AFL listed players in the SANFL finals series?

As for this game the Crows should win, but my gut feel is we might be a sneaky chance. Would certainly want to put in a better shift than we did in our last outing.

Any idea on the rules about what happens if the AFL side is knocked out on the same weekend their reserves side plays, but the day before?

Not sure it's the same these days, but IIRC back in 2014 when the Power lost the Prelim it had an affect on who could play SANFL the next day. Think they went pretty much all AFL listed + Summerton but were unable to play the ruckman (Biemanns maybe?).

So lol, no, no idea really how it works today

Bruggeman. Was one of their best all year but had to be dropped and plonkers like Butcher played instead.

I have a feeling there were 19 Power-listed players, plus Summerton and someone else (not Bruggeman though).

As a matter of interest - what were the rules for player qualification in reserves finals back in the good ol' days (predating the expanded VFL)?

I reckon if they didn't meet the minimum game requirement, they could only play if their AFL side was still alive.
I seem to recall selection issues if the AFL side was knocked out the same weekend.
Oops, I just re-read your post and realised that I answered the wrong question. The old SANFL system was very similar in any case. I think the number of games for qualification might have been half a season?

TRB, I think Pseudo's referring to the local situation pre-1990. Was it that you were ineligible to play reserves finals if you had played more than 3 league matches?

Indeed he was ;)

A maximum of three league games seems a bit overly-draconian to my memory, but imagine if the same standard was applied to the interlopers.
