Two page spread on the Slowdown

Thoughts? Especially that the SANFL Prelim got 1 page.

In 2001 there was 2 pages to the SANFL Preliminary.

And another thing - "We don't think we could afford Guy Sebastian to perform at the GF"

Whether you like him or hate him, he draws crowds alone. Why doesn't the SANFL ask him to sing the National Anthem at the GF?

He's doing it today at the Slowdown.

I discussed this one recently on the show as it happens, and had a chat with a couple of people at the ground about it yesterday.

It deeply disturbs me that this is fast becoming the premier day on the SA Football calendar. With due acknowledgement to the wonderful job it does raising much needed funds for the McGuinness McDermott Foundation, I find it truly concerning that what is essentially a kick and giggle affair is getting both prime time TV coverage and two stations providing radio coverage. This game will probably get around 25 - 28,000 today. Maybe one in 5 of these people will then go the SANFL Grand Final next week - a game that is truly a showcase of the finest the SANFL offers.

Granted, the admission fee would have something to do with this, but truly...if Slowdown is becoming this big at the expense of the TRUE main game in SA Football, then some serious questions need to be asked of the state of local football's publicity.

I think its symbolic of how most South Australian sports fans have turned into soft theatre goers.
I constantly giggle when the same clowns have a go at Victorians who are much more akin to others on here with a lot more real sports followers.

You could script an AFL game beforehand and these morons would still go.
Might as well as throw out some card board cut outs there today, I couldn't think of anything more boring to go and watch.

i have an idea, play the slowdown as a 15 min game at half time of the PF...or they could do it after the season.

yeah, i like that...play the bloody thing after the season.

That's why I'm so disappointed North didn't get in - the media coverage and public excitement would have been fantastic. Which game will more Eagles fans be at, the Slowdown or the GF?

The Slowdown is entertainment, not sport. It shouldn't even be mentioned in the sport section of the newspaper.

I can forgive the Johnny-come-lately media because they know bugger all about SANFL footy and are fed a steady diet of AFL. The people I will never forgive are people like KG Cunningham and Graham Cornes who sold their souls to the AFL, and turned their backs on the SANFL, a vehicle which promoted them to where they are today. Without the SANFL, KG would probably be working in a post office, and Cornesy would probably be selling fish 'n' chips somewhere along Jetty Road. They'd be nobodys.

All this false chest beating and so-called hatred of all things Victorian they carry on with, and yet the moment they had a chance to join them they were off like a shot. What about Neil Kerley, all his snarling and hatred of Victorians, and yet he is always over there mixing with them at functions, etc. The thing Kerley has found is what they have over there is real, club footy, not this Hollywood film star tinsel that we get from the crows and power.

I've bever seen a slowdown, never will. Watching a group of ageing players waddle around the field is not what I want to see in a game of footy. As was said before, the slowdown is entertainment (although God only knows why) and should be kept well away from real competitive sport. As for not having Guy Sebastian at the GF, thank goodness for that. The footballers sing better in the changerooms after a win than Sebastian does.

If only what you said was true

Is turning your back on the SANFL indicative of attending virtually every game at the Bay for the last 10 years.....?? I know Graham Cornes loves the Bays and the SANFL.

I've called on KG & Cornesy from here in Victoria to discuss the SANFL and they've put me on and they have reinforced what i said vis-a-vis purchasing club memberships.

Not saying they do it all the time, but it is a lie to say they have sold their soul to the AFL.....

Selective use of facts AH, I thought you were better than that.

Dude, major exageration there! Yes he does go to some games and Im a big fan of his for doing so but not even close to "virtually every game".

Im sure he'd get to more games if it wasn't for his work committments and family committments.

If I wanted to see a bunch of fat, ageing footballers playing the game, I'd get off the ground and watch blokes in my competition play.

I'm confident he has been to more games at the bay than what he has missed, virtually may have been the wrong word and i know it is not everygame, but the last thing graham Cornes can be accused of his turning his back on the SANFL...

I'm confident Wedgie has been to more games at the Bay this year than Cornes.

I'd put my money on Cornesy actually...unless the rumours that Wedgie really is a closet Bays supporter are true!

I reckon I saw Cornesy at at least 4 of the games, and he was probably there for a few more...

By the way, they read out an email on 5AA tonight which suggested that they merge the Slowdown with the SANFL Prelim final to help attendances!
