R2 North v South Saturday 1410

Postby DOC » Tue Apr 06, 2021 12:54 am

South looked good last week and North dropped one I thought they would have won.

Cameron Craig looks certain to miss and I expect South to be unchanged.

This game will be a battle of the midfields. Both sides have a mixture of great experience and supply to the forwards (inside 50's) will be high. One criticism I have of South is they need to convert more inside 50's to goals. Bad kicking is bad football.

Hopefully, South by a point.

I can’t gauge South’s form yet so this is hard to pick. You would think North at home will bounce back from a shock loss last week. I think it will be very close.

This will be a cracker of a game, South not truely tested last week against an undermanned Crows Ressies and the Roosters not doubt fired up after their somewhat surprising loss (maybe not so surprising, Doggies are going to be okay). These teams could come up with the first draw for the year, can't split em.

Going to be a cracking game IMO

Watched South last week - hard to get to really know where we sit yet.
Goal kicking needs to be much better as any misses in this game could cost us.

North will be definitely looking to make a statement from last week.

South look very fit and think they will run it out more than the Roosters.

South by 5 points.
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Thanks for stepping in Phil after Wedgie and I were unable to call the game due to the no alcohol rule whilst on air. They said it detracts from the experience but as I pointed out it is a pre requisite to get through most South seasons let alone games.

I think Brett will be listening in so good luck.

Daniel Nobes used to kick goals for fun.

Too big, too strong and too good for his opponents in community and country football, the man mountain key forward topped the goalkicking century for three consecutive seasons from 2016-18.

Nobes started his goalkicking frenzy by bagging 109 for Christies Beach in the Southern Football League in 2016 and followed with a whopping 130 and 115 for Waikerie in the Riverland Football League, where he became the first Magpie to kick a ton of goals in the minor round.

That gave him a remarkable total of 354 in three seasons.

Nobes was a local hero, who, at 200cm and 121kg and possessing a powerful pair of hands and booming kick, terrorised opponents.

But something was missing for the 26-year-old, who is looming as an unlikely name to watch in The Advertiser’s triple-header of live streamed SANFL action this weekend.

As much as I enjoyed playing down south and in the Riverland, there was a part of me that thought I could be playing at a higher level,’’ Nobes said.

Given time to reflect during last year’s COVID-19 shutdown, he decided the time was right to make his move.

“I didn’t want to sit back later in life and ponder what might have been,’’ the Adelaide City Council arborist said.

“I thought I was good enough to play at a higher level and give the SANFL a crack.’’

South Adelaide’s round two clash with North Adelaide will be one of three matches live streamed on advertiser.com.au on Saturday.

It was current Panthers reserves runner Neil Reeve, also a close mate of Nobes and former Christies Beach coach, who set up the goalkicking giant’s try out at the club.

But first Nobes knew he had to get fitter.

He signed up for a crash course, eight-week fitness challenge and shed 7kg.

Then, after consultation with Reeve, he caught up for a coffee with South coach Jarrad Wright and was invited to pre-season training.

“Daniel had been a local park footy player for 10 years, where he dominated, and told me he didn’t want to be sitting in a bar in 10 years time and be thinking what might have been,’’ Wright said.

“I was happy to give him an opportunity to show us what he's got, he did all the work, had 22 shots at goal in three trial games and was rewarded with a league game on the weekend.’’

Nobes, who is a cousin of former star South Australian batsman Paul Nobes, didn’t expect to force his way into the Panthers strong league side in round one after they made last year’s preliminary final.

But after kicking 9.10 in two reserves trials against Central District and West Adelaide and three goals without a miss in a league trial against Port Adelaide, combined with a back injury to last year's leading goalkicker Sam Overall, he started at the goalfront against the Crows on Good Friday and shone.

Nobes, wearing the No. 62 guernsey, hauled in five marks and had six shots at goal, booting 2.4, and looked at home on the big stage.

“He gave us a nice presence and deep target and it was a special day for him,’’ Wright said.

“It’s quite an amazing story from where he’s come from.’’

Nobes, who grew up in the southern suburbs and started his career with Reynella’s under-8s, described his league debut as “fantastic’’.

“I loved every minute of it. It made the journey worthwhile,’’ he said.

Nobes can be seen in action against the grand finalist Roosters on advertiser.com.au from 2.10pm, as The Advertiser continues its season-long commitment to broadcasting weekly state league action.

Wow that North team is very strong, talent all over the ground. I can't see South having much of a chance against that line up.

SANFL’s latest addition to the 200 club, North Adelaide’s Jarred Allmond, has revealed he ”needed a change” upon his departure from Woodville-West Torrens at the end of 2017.

Having played 143 League games, including the 2011 premiership, with the Eagles since his debut in 2009, Allmond has been quick to become a fixture in the red and white at Prospect.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, the 30-year-old said he has thrived on having more responsibility as an older player with the Roosters.

The dashing left-footer has featured in two premierships, his other coming in North’s fairytale 2018 triumph in rising from fifth spot on the ladder and a wooden-spoon in the previous season.

Originally from Two Wells, Allmond is one of 11 children and the seventh oldest, ensuring he gained plenty of healthy competition amongst his siblings in the backyard and loungeroom throughout his childhood.

Outside of football, the three-time West Eend State player works for the City of Burnside as a concreter, ensuring he keeps active during the day before training during the week.
