R7 Sturt v Centrals Saturday 1310

Really looking forward to this thread.

Will anyone from Centrals suggest they need a taller player? I seem to recall one or two posts over the last 6 weeks about it.

Well if constant negativity is a spur to playing better then Centrals will win by 60 goals. But it's not and never has been.

Sturt were impressive against Glenelg and were dead set unlucky to lose.

I think this will be a close one and I see Sturt winning at home by 3 goals.

We definitely need a taller player given the weather is going to be perfect.

We are bang average and be doing well to get within 6 goals.

I'm calling this game on the Digital Pass on Saturday and, thanks in part to Phil Herden's stats, have worked out the following:

ALL RECENT ENCOUNTERS:
Sturt have won the last 11 encounters*
Central's last win v Sturt at any venue - Round 17 (August 8th) of 2015 @ Elizabeth**

AT UNLEY OVAL:
Sturt have won the last 6 encounters
Centrals' last win v Sturt at Unley  -  Round 15 (August 3rd) of 2014 @ Unley***

*Current record for longest run of wins is 11, held by Sturt over West Adelaide.
The Bloods last win against Double Blues back in Round 16 (August 1st) of season 2015.

**Should they win this Saturday, it would be 2,113 days since Central have defeated Sturt at any venue.

***Should they win this Saturday, it would be 2,483 days since Central have defeated Sturt at Unley Oval.

Sturt to get out to a flyer, get 6 or 7 goals up by 1/2 time,
then we'll match them or slightly outscore them in the second half & we'll lose by 4 or 5 goals.
This seems to be the trend at Unley Oval lately.

Zane Kirkwood to retire after this weekend's game.

Big loss to the Blues and to the SANFL.

Club Statement ||
Club champion Zane Kirkwood (sponsored by DC Direct) has advised the Club of his retirement following this weekend's match against Central District.
An ongoing back issue has affected the 30-year old's fitness. After discussions with coaches, medical staff, and family, he has decided to call time on his 222-game career.

The last highlight is how I remember Zane

That goal, followed by the shot of Mick Goddens head in his hands.

Jet, absolute Jet!

Even last game against us he was influencing the game early and setting the standard for his mates with body through the ball footy to win it and get his team going forward.

His example in the first half forced his mates to follow his lead as I said in the game thread Sturt deserved to be in front at half time.

He faded somewhat in the 2nd half and whether that was due to his injury but once again he along with his mates lifted to try and get the win.

The one opposition player in the last 10 years I would have loved to have come to the Bays but there was no chance given his loyalty to Sturt.

Go well oh brave and noble servant of the game, you’ve earned every accolade.

Agreed, we will need to keep the ball on the ground and perhaps use a largely handball game if we are going to deny Sturt's talls (and they have a lot of them). Either that, or the club must have developed some magic platform football boots that will add six inches to our players' height during the break ;)

We have no flexibility with our talls if they are struggling or an injury.
Selection has been a problem for years now,how can you drop Patterson and bring in Aleer. It would be best to keep Patterson in and play Aleer as the 3rd tall defender.
Congrats to Aleer but he's not a key position player and it's a big ask, hope Fort doesn't get injured.
Also how about rewarding a ruckman/key position player for good form.
Jacob Thomson should be playing league footy after some good performances in the 2s.

Thankfully Kirkwood chose to stay in the SANFL, as I believe he was seriously looking at a move to Victoria when the Magpies were ended by the stoke of a pen. Certainly has been outstanding at Sturt, will be part of their all time greats now which is a fair effort. Hope he pursues coaching.

Massive respect for Kirkwood, as hard working a footballer as you could wish to see. All the best to him in his future endeavors.

Maybe not, but he’s exciting and he’s the future so get him in! Agreed we have gone in smaller again but we’ve brought in some more X factor so who knows ...and just quietly if we finish above 10th this year that will be a good result so let’s get some game into kids and not worry too much about the win loss column... Congrats to Kirkwood by the way on an exceptional career- a deadset champ!
