BRETT BACKWELL JOINS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL'S ELITE
Tonight, the South Australian National Football League named Brett Backwell, from the Glenelg Football Club, the 2006 Magarey Medallist. The annual black tie Magarey Medal Presentation Dinner was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and was telecast live on Channel Nine.
Brett finished on 26 votes, 9 clear of Stephen Kenna of South Adelaide and Justin Cicolella of the Eagles.
Brett receives two return business class airfares to London flying Malaysia Airlines with $2,000 spending money.
Other winners presented on the evening included;
Ken Farmer Medal presented to the Sir James Leading Goal kicker – Mark Passador (Woodville-West Torrens)
Reserves Magarey Medal – Ryan Lewis (Norwood)
Tomkins Medal (Under 19's) – Samuel McDonald (West Adelaide)
McCallum Medal (Under 17's) – Jack Bampton (Norwood)

Brett Backwell becomes the 9th Glenelg player to win the Magarey Medal.
His 26 votes is the highest number of votes polled by the winner since Nathan Buckley in 1992 - 27. (Josh Francou also polled 26 in 1996)
His career tally of votes now stands at 61 - 12 of those were at West in 2002.
It is the 4th time that Backwell has been in the top 20.
Justin Cicolella has now become the first Eagles player to poll 100 votes - 109 in total.
He has 26 first preference, 12 second preference and 7 third preference votes over an eight year period.
For the 8th season in a row he has finished in the top 20 including:
-equal third in 1999
-third in 2002
-third in 2003
-fourth in 2004
-equal fifth in 2005
-equal second in 2006
It is the equal highest an Eagles player has polled in the Magarey Medal, Shayne Breuer finished equal 2nd in 1993, Gavin Colville 2nd in 2000 and equal 2nd in 2004.
Stephen Kenna has finished in the top 20 for the first time. It is the highest placing by a South player since Andrew Osborn won it in 1998.
Chad O'Sullivan in his first season of SANFL finished 4th. He polled 16 votes out of 19 minor round matches.
It is also the first time Tim Inkster has finsihed in the Top 20.
