South Australia National Football League (SANFL) Hamley Bridge Football Club Butcher, John Approved 2021-08-13 2021-08-13

Adelaide Plains league have finished their minor round. Hamley Bridge didn't make the finals starting this weekend, so Butch is free to play.

This may bore a few, but it reminds me of a player who played for South in 1933, when I was researching that seasons players.

https://www.safc.com.au/every-south-ade ... layer.html

Player 693 I believe is Harold Roy Holder; he played for Goodwood in the Amateur League, but because that season finished much earlier, he then turned out for the Association (Reserves) side for a couple of matches, then the League side for the last two.

Centrals have a player in their 2's who hasnt played all year. Barossa Districts have a bye and their season is over so he is playing against South on saturday at Elizabeth. This is basically the same as Butcher

In times gone by it was a common occurrence for teams to bring back their old players from the country to bolster their side in finals.
In 1956 and 1958, North brought back champion ruckman, Alan Aldenhoven from the country.
In Sturt's mid 1960s finals sides they would bring Malcolm Hill and Roger Dunn back from Berri and Tumby Bay respectively. They both played in Sturt premierships.
In 1971 Port brought back Kevin "Sambo" Salmon from Port Pirie, but to little effect.
Later in the 1970s, Port brought back Tony Hannan who was teaching and playing in Whyalla, to play in Finals sides and premierships. I think the first time was to replace the injured Carl Fragomeni in 1977.

Thanks, this seems ridiculous - what are the rules? Can teams "stack", strengthen their team pre-finals with players from other leagues. Surely there's a cut off date. Percentage still might be important for South.

I am always suspicious of Port, their history of repeatedly bending the rules, but I can't see it in this. They need tp ick up 220 points on South to overcome the % difference, so South have to lose their last two games by 100 points (counting both) against Port and West, and Port have to win their last 2 games by 100 points against South and Glenelg. Same story with Norwood who play North then Adelaide. Port won't play finals.

Sportsbet have PA a whopping $31 ....

should be $3001, they have no chance of making the 5

Watch him get a coaching gig and be a playing coach next year at the Magpies.

Literally makes no sense for Port to play Butcher. They’ve omitted a young player who loses a chance to play just to play Butcher for one or two games. Very bad form from Port which isn’t unexpected. Anyway, South desperately need a win to get some confidence back. Rose and Cross ie. leadership come back into the side which is great to see. South by a couple of goals.

Why is no one even questioning Port on playing Butcher ???

Is this in the rules or is this just what they want ??

If it is not part of the rules then SANFL clubs should be speaking up about it !!!
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

My view is Butcher is so far off SANFL level now it isn't funny, let them play him.

Yeah, I agree re : Butcher. Just feel it sets a very dangerous precedent for not just South by other SANFL clubs in the future (no pun intended there)

I never knew John Butcher was playing for Port Magpies now but he still looks good.

What is happening at Alberton? Two off the ball free kicks at centre bounces to Port near the end of the game when South needed to win the clearance. South lose the game and season over.

Sturt still have to beat North and Eagles as you will beat West.
South will be playing finals.

Yep South will play finals no question.

However if it wasn’t for Gibbs and Broadbent this year they’d be in the spoon conversation

I know the tackle count isn’t the be all and end all indicator for effort but it’s the only public one we see. To be beaten in the tackle count and have less possessions speaks volumes when you lose.

South can no longer get the double chance. Before last Saturday they were marginal favourites to get the double chance, but now the are a game behind North and a huge amount of percentage.
Also on the coverage they said that Port are still a chance to make the five, but they have too big a percentage differential as well.

Port aren’t beating the invincibles let alone winning by around the 150 points they would require
