A North player won the Shearman and a South player was one of two for the magarey.

How can that be sour grapes?

There's some delicious irony in the Eagles having to share their first Magarey Medal win....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

It would be interesting to see the extent of the correlation between the winner of the Magarey and where the club finishes the minor round.

My first thought is that the Magarey winner will more often than not come from the team that finishes the season 1st or 2nd given victories mean increased likelihood of votes. On the other hand you'd expect more competition for these votes from within the team due the presence of multiple star players.

It may be that the sweet spot to win a Magarey factoring in the above is for those clubs that finish the season 3rd-4th.

I wish some in the media and others can get their head around the principles of finishing order. I've seen it often before and repeated again on SANFL website by Zac Milbank for this years Magarey. I'm sorry Zac but Snook and Hayes were not tied for 2nd, followed by Partington & Combe tied for 3rd. They were tied for 3rd and 5th respectively.

Well the Dogs came top 3 for 11 years and only had 1 winner.

At a real random guess with no stats im going with the winner generally comes from top 3, as you said wins enough games to get the 3 votes but I will go with their team doesn't win the flag that often as it also meant they relied more on an individual than a team of champions.

A couple of other thoughts – the big blowouts where teams win by 40+ points and collect all 3-2-1 votes feel like they are much rarer than they used to be with clubs focussed more on defence in the last 15 years combined with the lack of firepower (much of which gets siphoned to the AFL).

With much tighter losing margins there is more temptation that the umpires will award a single vote to the best player in a losing team.

Teams that are middle rung will often have a single player who is quite dominant who will rack up 30 possessions and kick a goal even if the team loses. If he jags a few single votes in these losses and the team wins 7-8 games where he may well be judged BOG without competition from his peers………..suddenly he is the frame to win the Magarey

Good one for Spelly to check out.

Buckley's 31st game for premiership points was the 1992 GF, completing the double
Tsitas's 26th game for premiership points was Round 19, completing the double...

...however Luke Partington actually took 25 - played 6 games for Norwood in 2015; then 19 in 2019.

1st - 28
2nd - 21
3rd - 27
4th - 14
5th - 17
6th - 9
7th - 10
8th - 8

8 of these were from last place. Teams used to poll better in losing sides pre 1970 than they do now. In the period 1945-1969, only one team polled less than 30 votes in a season, but no one until 1969 polled 80 or more. And we are talking a similar amount of games to now that had votes polled (17 to 19) until 1969 (20).

Sorry, that's minor round position.

Going back to quickest to the premiership/Magarey double, the length in days for Buckley is 434 and Tsitas is 392.

Other stuff:

- Glenelg polled the most votes in the Magarey count for the first time since 1975;
- Since full voting records have been published (1933-), this is the 5th time - 1934, 1969, 1973, 1975, 2021
- Adjusting for the number of rounds in a season, the 86 polled was the highest since Central in 2004
- Using a 22 round season as base, it equalled the club record set in 1973
- Bryce Gibbs is the 3rd oldest to have won the Medal, (32 y 6 m 13 d) behind Harold 'Vic' Cumberland (Sturt, 1911, 34 y 3 m 21 d) and Don Lindner (North, 1967, 32 y 6 m 18 d)
-As the votes were read out, Eagles became the highest team vote getter from 1991 onwards in Round 13. At this point in time, with the exception of the Crows Reserves, every other club had won at least two times in this era. Leek Alleer polled 1 votes for Central to be 4 ahead in the 1991 onwards vote total, then Redden and Stengle made the deficit one...and it was the clubs first medalist James Tsitas who overtook the Dogs with 3 votes.
Votes Team Medals won
2140 Eagles 1
2117 Central 2
2046 Norwood 6
1957 Port 5
1783 Sturt 8
1687 North 7
1620 South 5
1600 Glenelg 2
1494 West 2

It would interesting to compare those figures with minor round win percentage in that time.

I'd say there'd be a strong correlation.

You would expect teams with more wins get comparatively less, and less wins with more...that looks like a lot less to me.

As mentioned, the first R.O Shearman Medal was awarded in 2000. It was 3-2-1, then became 5-4-3-2-1 in 2004. It was awarded by members of the 200 club until it became the coaches who each gave 5-4-3-2-1 in 2012.

I'm missing the 1995 winner, but the others from 1991 onwards are:

1991 - Mark Naley (South) 27
1992 - Nathan Buckley (Port) 28
1993 - Stephen Patterson (Norwood)
1994 - Rick MacGowan (Central)
1995 -
1996 - Rick MacGowan (Central)
1997 - Andrew Jarman (Norwood)
1998 - Simon Feast (Sturt) 20
1999 - Adam Pearce (Eagles) 17
2000 - Gavin Colville (Eagles) 29
2001 - Ryan O'Connor (Port) 21
2002 - Jade Sheedy (Sturt) 23
2003 - Brett Backwell (Glenelg) 18
Marco Bello (Central) 18
2004 - Salim Hassan (West) 31
2005 - Jeremy Clayton (Port) 40
2006 - Justin Cicolella (Eagles) 39
2007 - James Allan (North)
2008 - James Allan (North)
Jade Sheedy (Sturt)
2009 - James Allan (North)
2010 - James Allan (North)
2011 - James Allan (North)
2012 - James Allan (North) 75
2013 - Matt Thomas (Norwood) 74
2014 - Steven Summerton (Port)
2015 - Joel Cross (South) 88
2016 - Jared Petrenko (Eagles) 69
2017 - Joel Cross (South) 62
2018 - Nick Liddle (South) 99
2019 - Luke Partington (Glenelg) 76
2020 - Matthew Snook (Glenelg) 68
2021 - Campbell Combe (North) 77

Only 12 out of the 30 years listed matched the Magarey Medalist in that year.

The latest budget that I have for that year is Round 24 (so two games to go) and shows Robbie West in the lead with 17, followed by Glenn Kilpatrick and Jim Wynd on 15. But that excludes five mystery rounds.
