Would it be a numbers thing that more wins means less percent of votes and vice versa, because the game result is either 100% or 0%, whereas if a player from a losing team gets, say the 1 vote, then the winning team only gets 83% of the votes (compared to 100% of the winning stat) and the losing team gets 16%.
And for it to even out, then teams would have to win around 50% over the long run. But even that's not taking into account how dominant or dismal a team might be in it's good or bad years.

Whats better these days with the Magarey and Brownlow - Umps checking the stats to make sure noone with leather poisoning gets missed, or the old days where they voted more based on the number of individually brilliant acts they witnessed? (generalised question, not knocking this years worthy winners)

I had done some research on this, to see how much the winning side gets (excluding draws). You can see it's close to that 83%, but there's been a trend above and below that. I got slack in updating this table, as it goes from 1987 (the first occasion voting was announced in round order) to 2016:

Year % of votes to winning side
1987 81.06
1988 81.80
1989 76.21
1990 80.13
1991 81.97
1992 80.98
1993 82.02
1994 83.84
1995 84.86
1996 84.07
1997 82.17
1998 85.56
1999 85.00
2000 85.02
2001 86.14
2002 86.11
2003 88.45
2004 92.41
2005 86.48
2006 89.26
2007 87.55
2008 86.14
2009 85.61
2010 84.64
2011 83.33
2012 83.52
2013 82.96
2014 84.07
2015 80.11
2016 83.71
....
2021 84.07
Avg 84.20

edited to include this year

Won't be done again.

Try 2 premiership medal in 32 games.
