Geez that means Ill be somewhere within 200 metres of SD tomorrow

He should be easy to spot, either dry humping the front doors of the AFC or lifting his leg on the Power players race

Boys

even though the dogs got baked on the w/end, it was a great result for the sanfl, so well done doggies for playing your part

in all seriousness, the passion of the local fans for their local clubs is fantastic, I did not see one bit of trouble, as a club our supporters have copped a bit in our time but credit where credit is due, I thought our supporters were very humble in defeat and did a good job in recognition of the Eagles performance, and even though disappointed with our teams performance most supporters I spoke to were thankful for the wonderful journey the team and club has taken us on for the past 7 years

looking forward to 07, the year the dog bites back

The more I think about it and having a bit longer to reflect on the result I must admit you're spot on there.

I promised Dissident I'd barrack for the Eags but found myself barracking for the Dogs especially when Skipworth got near the ball and my opinion was its better the devil you know in regard to cocky opposition fans.

BUT Ive come around to your thinking, I think Sunday's result was a very good result for the SANFL, I just hope we can have a GF that's a spectacle soon though.
The thing that shits me is if a casual fan watched the AFL GF and the SANFL GF they'd think the AFL is much more entertaining to watch, which is the opposite to how its been all year. That 2nd quarter on Sunday was as ordinary and boring football as I'd seen for years.

I've got to agree on that second quarter. Both teams where just trying to smother the life out of each other I think. However, credit where it's due- well done Eagles. Now sit back and rest on your laurels cause we'll be back next year!!

Watching the 2nd quarter I thought to myself that the Eagles were beating the Dogs at their own game, would that be a fair assessment?

I think that is spot on. The Eagles applied tremendous pressure, and it was notable a number of Eagles players obviusly decided before the game to annoy the hell out of the Gowans brothers. Central really got a taste of their own medicine yesterday.

Mate it is THE key to winning finals in the SANFL, attack the ball and the body with intensity

I saw it time and time again in Port v Glenelg GF,s Port did it sensationally in 94 against the Eagles - Ginevar was magnificent,
Central have done it time and time again this millenium and Eagles (by all reports did it yesterday.

I've always maintained Port are the easiest time to beat tactically as you do to them what they do normally to you they fold like a pack of cards, we did it earlier this year to Centrals on Adelaide oval and they folded to.

21 hard tough committed footabllers who attack the footy and the body with 100% intensity and without fear and you go a long way to winning finals.

that is why I didn't mind the Williams', Ginevars, northeasts and Gowans Sims, McIntoshes etc of the SANFL world, and we we ruled the roost a long time ago the Salisbury and Strngers you need players in your team who are preapared to do the hard tough committed team things with discipline to win finals footy.

As I said it ain't rocket science and it is soooo easy in theory, but in practice.....

Flashy pretty footy don't win finals, hard tough committed disciplined footy does.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I was just waiting for Centrals to break the game open in the 2nd. I remember close to the end of that quarter the ball got closer and closer to the northern end goals, and I just thought it was a matter of time before a goal would be kicked but somehow it wasn't to be - we just kept clearing the ball out of there.

To be honest, I've not seen Centrals play like we did in the second quarter - usually they don't need to.
I think I'm the last person to comment on the second quarter. In my mind, just as the siren blew to start the second stanza, I thought CONTAIN. I wasn't imagining what DID happen but I was hell bent on us not giving them any use of the breeze.

And, we didn't.

I do disagree though with some people - many on the day were saying the Eagles were playing negative football trying to stop it all the time by "smothering and getting on the player with the ball".

Well to me, that's called footy. We just concentrated in that aspect more than any other time this year.

So yeah, I can imagine it wasn't pretty to watch (the second quarter) but we acheived what we needed, and that was not letting the Dogs back in with the breeze. And as history would show - it worked a treat. We kicked away in the third and the Dogs boys were second guessing themselves the whole game.

I knew when Slade (I think it was) had a mark 45 out (to kick from 50) and was umming and arring about what to do, and ended up kicking straight to us that their confidence was shot.

Wilson and Ware - two who I thought were the main dangers for the game really did nothing between them. Very little anyway.

I actually think the Eagles pressure made the Dogs play ugly footy in the second.

I agree, a few North supporters were talking about "what if" as we got so close in the Prelim but I honestly don't think we could have applied or withstood the pressure of footy that was played in that first half.

I do disagree with the people though that say pretty footy can't win Grand Finals, Sturt did it for many years and North have done it on a few occasions over my lifetime also.

Pretty footy can DEFINATELY win grand finals.

But every game is individual - each second of the game brings a different next second...
Sometimes a game changes tone and complection (Shit don't let the misses hear me use those words) without any black and white decision or instruction.

I thought the third and fourth quarters were pretty!!!!! :)

Excellent points and I must admit I didn't see any of the 2nd half so can't comment on that.

1980 Tassie Medalist

good post

this is where you also have to be spot on with your recruiting, in the past 10 years the dogs have targeted players such as Hulm, Hopwood, Arnott, Gowans, Bello, all these boys are hard at the contest, you need to recruit for the SANFL style of footy, players that can win the hard footy and impose themselves on a contest, this is why VFL and WAFL footballers often make the better recruits, some players straight out of the AFL system are too used to keeping's off style of footy
