Gavin Colville Awarded Premiership Medal

Postby Wedgie » Tue Oct 10, 2006 3:26 pm

I was there to witness today at West End Gavin Colville being awarded a premiership medal.
Its a lovely gesture by the SANFL but Im not sure if I agree with it as it opens up a huge can of worms in regard to the "grey area" as to who should get one and who shouldn't, I'd be interested on others thoughts.

My thoughts are I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of a premiership medal.

He certainly does deserve it, but from now on there should be a set criteria in place so it clears up any grey areas about this.

I think it's been handled better than in 97' ... Personally I think every player who played a game or more throughout the year should receive one, maybe with a different symbol or colour?

I agree, there are players who play all the games, then get injured (or suspened) in the game before the GF.

he probably did deserve a medal, but i sort of agree with CP on this one, in that if they are going to give medals out to players who didnt play then it does open up a seriously big can of worms. Im entitled to agree all players receive the playing medal and anyone who played a league games receive a medal of participation.................

We briefly discussed this today, perhaps 2 sets of medals?
One for the GF players and another for the players who have played league footy that year but weren't in the team on GF Day?

i think that will be what the majority would be thinking.

Maybe to be recognised as a player medal you have to play over 1/2 the year in the league and anything other then that then you get a participation medal...............

I dont agree with this, however,a standard was set in 97,that standard being no-standard at all.If you dont play, for mine, you dont get one.Simple.If you start handing them out to every one the gloss and prestige attached will dissapear.21 medals get struck for 21 players.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

McIntosh and Colville aren't "everyone" though. Special circumstances for both of these players.

This will always cause a fair bit of discuaaion, I think someone suggested the AFL awards a medal to everyone that played a game for the premiers during the season. I don't know what the right answer is, but if you give ot to one, why not to another.

Didn't agree with it in 97 and don't agree with it now,

Should get something but not a premiership medal........
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

He was quite emotional.
Diss said to me when they asked him to go up on stage "I hope they're giving him a Premiership Medal otherwise the poor bugger's going to be devestated".
I don't have a huge issue with it but I would like to see some steadfast rules and not just having it made up as we go along.

When I become dictator of the country, I shall enforce the following law in all football codes:

Players who miss out on playing in a GF solely through injury (e.g. named in the squad but withdrawn before the game) get a medal.

Players who miss out through suspension don't get a medal.
Clowns OUT. Smears OUT. RESIST THE OCCUPATION.
