Port Adelaide Magpies to change name

Postby Dogwatcher » Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:00 pm

Rumour has it that the continuing gentrification of the once great working class wharf side community Port Adelaide is going to result in the Port Adelaide Football Club being forced to change its name to greater reflect the new residents of the area.

The development group working on the redevelopment of significant parts of the Port Adelaide area would like to change the well known, and highly identifiable name of Port Adelaide to Newport Quays in line with its development.

Included is the proposal to change the name of certain areas central to the football club's community heart including Ethelton and Alberton to Newport Quays.

This would result in the Magpies and Power changing their name in line with these great changes, so that the club is identifiable to the new community that's being formed.

The new middle to upper class movers and shakers, that the Power have been coveting in recent years, are more likely to support a club reflective of the new community - thereby Newport Quays will be the new name.

Bye Bye Black and White bird.

Anyone have any suggestion of new colours and an emblem for the Newport Quays Football Club?

Ah come on PAP.
I wanted more than that.

but yeah lame attempt, I'm aware of that. If I had more time, I woulda dummied up a proper press release.

However, it's partially based on facts.

This development company does want to rename parts of the Port.

And I truly hope the People of the Port fight it.

I'm no fan of Port Adelaide football - but while that community's being gentrified, I hope the football community maintains the individuality and community feeling that's made it hwat it is today.

Otherwise - both of the Port clubs will lose the spirit of what they truly are. Don't become a club where Yuppies support it cos it's cool!

Hmmm...socially aware rantover. Time to put some Billy Bragg on.

not entirely true, Urban Construct (the developer) want to create a New suburb called Newport Quays for marketing purposes. If I was a developer I would buy up around this new development to create some urban regrowth. anyway back on topic when its finished Port might have some more well off supporters

Part of that plan is to change the names of the suburbs which border the redevelopment area - which includes Ethelton - the 'spiritual home' of the Magpies.

whatever happens though - I think the whole redevelopment of the Port has some interesting ramifications for the football club (s)

I dont think tthe SANFL clubs in this day and age can afford to choose who supports their club ... Each's hard earned is as good, and valuable to the club as the others.

As Diss mentioned in a post the other day, through the urban sprawl throughout the generations there has already been in a transition in where one lives and who you support, I live in the Port heartland (and virtually always have), socialise in Eagle territory but still support Norwood

That's all very true - but social fabric's pretty important in a club.
And yes I understand supporters are transitional - heck I live in the middle of Westies territory!

But I just Port can make this transition which in a few generations will have occurred, and maintain its character and stay true to its roots.

Croatia did
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.
