MEDIA RELEASE FROM SAFC (Sunday October 15th 2006)


Rhys Archard wins 2006 Knuckey Cup

In front of 300 of the Panther faithful at Alan Hickinbotham Oval, Noarlunga, Rhys Archard was awarded the 2006 Knuckey Cup as South Adelaide’s Best & Fairest player, Saturday night.

Archard, a first year player from the Echuca Bombers won with 44 votes from Craig Parry on 38. One vote behind tied on 37 were former Echuca team mate Scott McGlone and Magarey Medal runner up Stephen Kenna. Tied for firth place on 36 votes were Alwyn Davey & Josh Thewlis.

The awards ceremony concluded a successful season for South which saw the Panthers win their first finals game since 1990 and finish the season with a record six game winning streak at Noarlunga.

The club is looking forward to even further success in 2007

Most Improved Award (Provided by Philomena Brady) - Alwyn Davey

Leading Goal Kicker Award - Ben Warren

David Kantilla Memorial Trophy (Best First Year Player) - Rhys Archard

LJ Brown Trophy (Reserves Best & Fairest) - Matthew Ferber

Reserves 2nd Best & Fairest - Shaun Maxfield & Brad Hunter (tie)

apparentlt SOUTH changed their B & f from the friday night to the saturday night and as a result there were a couple of non-attendees.

When was the last time a first year player won the B&F at a club?

Don't know if this is the answer, but I think Kristian DePasquale at Port in 2004. Not sure what his previuous senior record was.

Adam Fisher (Glenelg) and Jeremy Clayton (Port) last year.

Billy Neely (Glenelg) also did it in 2003 (as a player not from the AFL).
