Port Adelaide the best 1900's but 2000+ ???

Postby mal » Tue Nov 14, 2006 9:41 am

Port Adelaide WAS the best SANFL club in the 1900's.
They produced the best footballers through thier junior
devlopement, supporter base and selective recruiting from other leagues.
As an opposition supporter I envied rather than despised thier success.
With the advent of the extended AFL comp. this once proud club has struggled
in this millenuim and has now become just another SANFL club.

A factor in the clubs demise would be the haphazard recruiting of footballers
in the last few years.
The personalities of SOME of thier recruits is questionable.
Some of the players recruited in reent times seem to be distractions.
Sure they had a couple in the last millenuim, but seem to have many 2000+

Now they are recuiting Hargreaves[a loveable kind of guy] who is an iffy propostion,
and Cupido who has the talent but desire + disciplines?
Even Waterhouse and superstar Jeremy Clayton may not be angelic all the time.
Throw in Ryan Occonor a top player but might have been a bad influence.
Chad Davis is another who came over with a big reputation, and has struggled.

Now Baird after one good year has left the club as well.

Sorry Port fans you were the very very very best by a mile
but these days your not.

Still a few years left in this century so who knows?
With the resurgance of the Port area in the upcoming years, who knows?
They could become a superpower again.
Or will it take away their reknowned toughness?

Anyone trying to pick 'the best club of the 1900s' at this stage last century would have said it was North Adelaide (3 premierships 1900-06), with Port and Norwood close behind (2 each). Didn't quite turn out that way for the rest of the century, though.

Port Adelaide was the best club from 1900-1999. We've gotten off to a poor start this millenium, but we'll bounce back. We cannot be silenced for too much longer.
