sanfl meeting re new type of salary cap

Postby ronburgandy » Wed Nov 15, 2006 8:20 am

just heard that the sanfl board may be having a meeting to discuss the possiblity of no more salary caps in local football leagues in sa and putting in a points system such as some victorian leagues. such as 1 point for a local player and say 5 points for a player with afl experience and 4 points for sanfl experience. teams will only be able to have so many points allocated to them to use. so if you finish last you will have more points allocated to your team than the top team. the idea being for a closer league and also to help the less financial clubs. anyone else heard about it?

Haven't heard that one but a points system has been in place in the NBL for a couple of seasons and its a farce to say the very least.

Just the way players are assessed by rigid rules which doesn't really classify them by their value to a club.
There's no way around it too because the only other way of running it would be to have an independent tribunal decide on points but that would add further confusion to the matter.
Disadvantages players heaps too, especially older players, for eg Hargs would be the highest rated player you could get under a points scheme yet a draft prospect who plays every league game for a club this year wouldn't even rate as half as much.

I actually was willing to give it a go in the NBL but it soon became obvious how bad a system it is.
I doubt it would even get a look in the SANFL, I think if anything the amount of "imports" from other areas may be restricted and would be more viable.
Personally Im against any sort of artificial way of evening out teams, I hate artificial comps.
Our comp has survived for over 100 years quite nicely without it.

Serious question not a sledge, would you have said that in 2002 and 2003 when you were down on your knees financially??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

i don't think that the sanfl will take it on. they will continue with the salary cap. they are just voting on it for the local leagues in sa. such as hills, southern, river murray and so on. just thought someone in the sanf forum may have been aware of the idea.

Nah, but our pokies operation was almost closed (around Rooster Rally time) which would have put us on our knees.
Managed to have the money to spent on people like Rhino O'Connor, Chad Davis, etc.
We were never as rich as the bigger clubs of course but hadn't been for 100 years of our existence.

The points system seems like a good idea in theory. It would help reward local players and in turn clubs for producing their own. The Hargraves example Wedgie uses is a good example of how the system is flawed though. Perhaps there are ways around that? I think the competition is pretty good as it is. Those clubs who have got their sh*t together off field have been successful and it's healthy for every club and the competition to be sound off the field. I do think some sort of constraint is a good thing (i.e. the salary cap).
