SANFL Stands Alone

It appears that the SANFL will be the last league with any autonomy.

As reported in the West Australian today, the WAFL is considering changing it's name to AFLWA, in a move to attain more funds to keep the local clubs afloat.

As much as I hated the pokies, they have been a saviour for many of the SANFL teams and who knows how strong the entire league would have been if the state government had only allowed them into the licensed clubs, or at least had a moratorium on when the pubs could have them.

So now I find myself behind enemy lines. To those still in the land of the free, fight the good fight and preserve what is left of non-Victorian football heritage.

Sad stuff, the day the SANFL changes its name to AFLSA is the day I'll lose interest in football altogether.

The WAFL called itself 'Westar Rules' ten or so years ago.
That wasn't successful so why should this be any different?

Exactly, Westar Rules was an disaster, AFLWA wouldn't be any different in that it would be an disaster.
Even worse again in promoting the game as "AFL" and not Football like it is and has been for over 100 years.

All very interesting

I've just taken the time to look at the official report (Can be found on http://www.wafl.com.au).

Worth a gander for those interested in where state league footy should be going.

Some like the raising of the draft age by one year make a lot of sense for mine.

Back to the topic... I think change is an excellent thing, but only when warranted. The WAFL have had problems in the past and keep trying to reinvent themselves to capture days long gone. The SANFL have not had the same problems and shouldn't have to change as drastically.

As Phil said, some things in the report are good - particularly the higher draft age. Could help prevent some problems that have arisen in the past, such as homesickness.

AFL-SA... fine. But if they take away the Thomas Seymour-Hill Trophy and replace it with corporate metal, that would be the last straw.

Prehaps we could all buy the rights to the name and webpage of AFL-SA so that they cant change it.

Speaking of which, the Sheffield Shield Trophy will be "permanantly" housed at the Adelaide oval, and there is some discussion about bringing it back into regular service.
