$15,000 clean-up bill after graffiti outrage
By DOUG ROBERTSON
06dec05

IT'S the graffiti calling card West Adelaide Football Club didn't need. Now it and West Torrens Council face a $15,000 clean-up bill.

Ugly graffiti has been splashed over almost everything that stands upright at Broadspectrum Oval at Richmond at the weekend. West general manager Doug Thomas's blood was boiling after he found spray-painted "tags" covering grandstands, outside the "Mound Bar", coaches' boxes, windows, fences, sponsorship signs, the scoreboard, brick walls and the players' race.
Fortunately, the vandals could not get inside the race where West has placed a monument to the three Bloods teenagers who died while playing in underage teams in 2002 and 2003.

Police have taken photographs of the "tags" and will attempt to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. West Torrens Council has promised to take action to recover clean-up costs against any person convicted of the graffiti.

It also plans to install surveillance cameras at Broadspectrum Oval, city manager Trevor Starr says, because of a worrying trend in the district.

"There's no art about this, it's pure vandalism and we're not prepared to put up with a summer of vandalism," he said. "This is a very early part of the summer and there seems to be a lot of young people who have a lot of time on their hands." Some of the graffiti can be painted over but in other areas materials might have to be replaced because it is impossible to remove all the offending paint.

"You've got no idea of the extent of the damage," Thomas said. "The council has been wonderful in cleaning it up but it'll take four or five people several days. It's unbelievable people can have nothing better to do than cause all this damage and leave it for someone else to clean up."

Let's hope they catch the bastards...! No place for it. If you want to graffiti something, do it to your own house..!

I always thought Richmond oval was fairly secure, and would be very hard to get into, not like Elizabeth and Unley and other grounds where you can just walk straight in.

I remember I had a servo with a mate in Morphett Vale some (many) years ago. Went to the loo one day and caught this kid spraying his tag all over the loo's walls. Grabbed him and his can of YELLOW spray paint and turned him into a mod. Emptied the whole can in his hair. Told him if his dad complained to come down and see me. He never did and I wondered how long it took to grow out.

Geez I enjoyed it.

if they get caught the bloody justice system will do nothing
little pricks will get away with it

That is correct blacky, if there are minors (assuming the offenders are more than one) then a slap on the wrist is probably all they'll get. There parents will probably be informed but will care not for what there childern do and the cycle will continue until they are old enough to be charge.

Spot on chaps, a couple of little shits burned down half of my kids school a couple of years ago (main building's only just re-opened this term).
Little bastards got a bit of councilling and that was it. Time for parents of pricks like this to take ownership or be punished somehow.

Its funny, the govt has a scheme in the NW of Australia targetted at an aboriginal community where they can take the parents Centrelink payments from them if their children don't go to school everyday yet little white bastards in Adelaide can burn down schools or do $15,000 worth of damage to Richmond Oval and the parents won't get one cent taken off them. Don't get me started! :x

Trouble is Wedgie, there are more examples of extra help for Aboriginals, but not everyone else, but if you list them or speak out against it, you're classed as a racist.

I thought Westies owned Broadrectum, why would the council have to foot the bill?

This says to me that my club has developed absolutely no roots in the local community as far as the younger generation is concerned. We're on borrowed time. Our 40 year old members aren't going to be alive forever.

F****** DO something at the club instead of piss and moan about the consequences!

For a start get the whole damned club into primary schools and let them know what the SANFL actually is :x

yeah, there should be family fun days where the whole family can deface the oval together. granddad can show the grandkiddies how to spray the tag and not drip the paint.

It's good to see kids with time on their hands wasting it, I thought spray cans could only be brought by 18 year olds yeah right. It is like booze and smokes i was buying them at 15 and no one asked me for I.D. Parents don't have a foot to stand on because of these doo gooders, no more spanking your kids and no more punishment the world is ****** like that. But these kids are as bad as the Sturt supporters who spray painted sturt rule 2003 around Broadspectrum Oval. I feel sorry for the council wasting it's rate payer's money on Crap like this. The Kids should clean it up and be made to look after the oval or even better have the player go to the kids place with spray paint and have some fun. I want to see what the parents would do then. It might make some of them wake up. The justice system needs a major overhaul and soon, or else it will be mob rule. These kids will complain if we ruined something they loved like that but i feel it is the only way they will learn.
Till Next Time

Ian, Westies own the Clubrooms. The oval is Council property.

Perhaps you should also note that when shoplifting is involved it is unlikely that you will be asked for ID..............

... and then you caught a bus to Richmond? :P

Seriously, let the punishment fit the crime. When the little turds are caught, gather their posessions - their precious PlayStation, Mobile Phones, skateboards, etc - and set to 'em with spray paint. Chuck in Dad's Commodore while you're at it.

Incidentally, does anyone remember when someone bust into Westies rooms through the roof and hoisted out a number of players guernseys? Happened back in the '80s I reckon, certainly when Banner Hardware was the guernsey sponsor.
