NORWOOD Oval has dumped its name but not its tradition with Coopers Brewery taking naming rights for at least the next five years.
Adelaide beer baron Glenn Cooper announced the birth of "Coopers Stadium" last night as part of a double deal which is likely to save Norwood from financial ruin.
The Legs' No. 1 sponsor for the past five years, Coopers has stepped up it's backing which allowed Fairmont Homes to come in as the Redlegs major sponsor. First approached for the naming rights six months ago, Coopers jumped at the chance to confirm it's links with Nor-wood. "My father Ken joined the vice-presidents group in the 1940s and I remember kicking a footy around here as a kid," Glenn Cooper said. "We stepped in five years ago when the previous sponsor left and we thought we needed to step up again.
"What makes it more special for us is to be involved with Fairmont Homes because we're two very successful South Australian companies who put a lot back into the community."
David Pickard, managing director of Fairmont Homes, is a Norwood fan who grew up at Campbelltown. His love of soccer hasn't dimmed his interest in the great SANFL club.
"My major sponsorship interest is Adelaide United but it wasn't difficult to get involved with Norwood," he said.
"Coopers Stadium" signs will be placed inside and outside the historic landmark at The Parade.
The valuable deal came at the most opportune time with general manager David Wark describing Norwood's financial position as "perilous".

The Norwood Football Club has requested that all empty cans and bottles be placed in the specially labels bins placed around the Oval. It is hoped that the deposit from these will contribute towards Norwood once again having their own club rooms. The Rennicks tent currently being used is not suitable during the Winter months.

No offence to the Coopers, which I love drinking their products, but it will always be Norwood Oval to me.

Yes but I would prefer to call it Coopers Stadium (well it should be Coopers Oval)
and be able to watch a game than have no Legs - without this sponsorship we were screwed

Coopers Stadium! I love it, after all, look at all the success Carlton had once they changed the name of their ground to Optus Oval...oh, yeah right.
So...Coopers Stadium it is
If we win a lot of games at home we've got the opposition over a barrell
Now we are going to have games 'under lites'
If our form does not improve at home the fans will be going a little pale
You have to be a stout indvidual to be a Legs fan these days
If there's any fights there will be trouble a brewing
If you catch a cold at the footy you can have monday off with 'Cooping Cough'
When you are ten goals down you can say you are up Coopers Creek without a paddle
'It's called Coopers Stadium now', 'No, I'm not Lion, Nathan'
A flat performance won't be tolerated
If we underperform, we now 'couldn't get cold'
Stubbie blokes without a sixpack allowed in half price
When it gets wet the players will be 'taking the top off' the surface
Every close game will be a 'bottler'
Sorry boys, that's it. Dang. I've probably missed a really easy one too!
regards,
REB
