Oval naming rights, what do you think?

This article on http://www.nafc.com.au/default.asp got me thinking about naming rights. Personally I'm glad that Prospect is still Prospect, but I can understand clubs grabing a fist full of $$$$$ to have their ground named after a sponser.

Prospect Oval is Prospect Oval !!!
A quick look at the 2007 SANFL program would confuse the traditional supporter. Coopers Stadium, Hamra Homes, Broadspectrum, Challenge Recruitment and Hickinbotham Ovals - what happened to playing at the Bay, the Parade or Elizabeth?. It is comforting to still be able to go to Alberton, Unley or even Thebby Oval.

And for all North supporters, you can still come to "Prossie" or Prospect Oval for League Football. Our Club's association with Robert Gerard and his family through major sponsorship goes back 18 years, as such we would not compromise our valued association through selling the naming rights to our Home Ground.

I am (honestly) confused. Why did they feel the need to mention the Gerard's in this paragraph?

Have the Gerard's paid money for the name NOT to be sold?

Seems out of context, or didn't we get the whole of the original note?

Why did you mention Robert Gerard's name again?
Next you will be mentioning Mistral!
It would be madness to mention Robert Gerard & Mistral everytime we talk about Prospect Oval- especially considering Robert Gerard is a chief sponsor, as is his company Mistral.
By the way, Mistral is nowhere near Prospect Oval- Mistral is located at Pt Wakefield Rd, Cavan & is sold by all good retailers...

I don't think so Dutchy (Should that be I hope not?) because our current financial situation is such we don't need in any way to sell off the naming rights to chase quick bucks and knowing the City of Prospect - they would want their cut of the sponsorship in any case.

For the record, the naming rights of the Oval were politely offered to Rob Gerard to see if it appealed to him. He was emphatic in saying no and as our major sponsor through Mistral the club would not "on sell" oval naming rights to another company that may get it more day to day publicity than our long term major sponsor.

If they blow up the Grand North goldmine,
then it might well be Mistral Oval, Gerard oval or Wedgie oval.

We will still have the Northern Tavern which is a bigger goldmine so we will collect the insurance money on Grand North and buy another pub!

I like the sound of "Grog Squad Oval".

In all seriousness I don't have a huge issue with it but as stated before don't comprimise my own values and continue to call ovals by their original name. If clubs need a bit of extra cash and can get it then good luck to them.

I do however think only long term deals should be done, the way Kardinia Park was changing its name every 2nd year at one stage was a farce as is the fact that two major stadiums have similar names which can be confusing (Telstra Dome and Telstra Stadium).

And if anyone wants to buy the rights to the name of this website, feel free to send me an email! ;)

"Mistral SA Footy" has a ring to it, over to you Mr Gerard.......
(Use of your yacht for one weekend over the summer will be fine)

Hickinbotham Oval? Where is that?

Apart from that I have no problems with renaming ovals for money, except Footy Pk!!

The should make names no longer than 1 word and have a good "ring" to it too.
Coopers Stadium sounds good.
Hickenbotham Oval is a good idea to stop confusing people with the real Noarlunga Oval that's been at now named Old Noarlunga for over 100 years. NAP is OK as its short and sweet. Aami is OK.
Broadrectum and Challenger Recruitment don't roll off the tongue though.

I like Challenge Recruitment Oval because of its length people wont be bothered and will just call it "The Bay"...where if it rolls off the toungue like Coopers and NAP people are more likely to adapt to it...

I wonder how many times you're going to cop "Is it a challenge to recruit to this Oval?"
Wouldn't mind a beer for every time some clown brings it up or something similar.

Alberton Oval will always be Alberton Oval.
