At a Glance: A born-and-bred Brisbane product who is an athletic key defender with a thumping left-foot kick. A Mt.Gravatt player throughout his career, he has been something of a late developer, having represented Queensland for the first time this year at U18 level after narrowly missing State U16 level in 2004. Made his senior AFLQ debut with Mt.Gravatt midway through the 2005 season and became a key figure for the Vultures after the national U18 championships this year. Was a standout in the annual Allies U18 Challenge match in Melbourne in AFL grand final week and was considered unlucky not to be selected in the AFL national draft.

A reasonable sized player - I'm suprised he didn't get picked earlier given some teams ahead of North probably lack some height in defence? If he goes alright, he could be a good back up tall defender to Hart, McIntrye, Schubert and Sporn.

It’s his first year in the TAC Cup where he played across half back for the Geelong Falcons and again we were just impressed with his general ball-winning, good speed and kicks the ball well on both sides. We think he has a skill level that is worth having a close look at for 12 months.

A fair bit of weirdness all around.

West decided to ignore the serious injury concerns surrounding Tippett, and just go with the 'best big guy available' (in fact, the only really big guy available) policy. I suppose that even if it doesn't pay dividends in 2007, it could well in 2008-- barring further ruck injuries the Clones aren't going to rush Tippett to play, and he's going to be given at least 3 years on their list to develop.

Sturt decided to ignore the 'Bonaddio rule' by taking a rookie with their first pick. Plus one with an injury history. At least he's at a size and weight where he should be ready to play round 1.

Norwood: Rodan. My first reaction was: WTF? Much like Lonie 2006, Port wouldn't bother getting a mature age player if they weren't willing to play him; so he'll play at least half of his games for the Pahhhhr in 2007. Plus as a previously-listed player they're only required to give him a one year contract. Then I thought: maybe Norwood are thinking tactically on this one. The general consensus is that Rodan is an honest trier but not quite there at AFL level; but he'd be a good, perhaps very good, SANFL footballer with plenty of years of service left to give. So maybe Norwood's jockeying themselves into pole position to get a long-term player. Norwood need height down back (not so much up-front), so it's interesting that they overlooked Grose. I hope to god that means there's a 190cm+ recruitment announcement in the offing.

All of this meant that the highest draft pick and the guy that I thought would be the biggest prize (now that Tippett's injured), Travis Boak, fell to Glenelg at #4. They would be absolutely stoked.

Port I think was the right place for Nathan Krakouer. A guy who is sublimely talented but about 3 stone wringing wet is going to have to be managed very carefully for his first year or two; it was a potential recipe for another disastrous breakdown of relations (not to mention injury) if another team took him, and wanted to play him in league before the Pahhhhr thought he was ready.

And spare a thought for Peter Hardy. There's no shame being picked last in the ND or even the rookie draft, as there's still hundreds behind you who missed out entirely. Not so the mini-draft. Brings back to mind the last kid picked for school sport in that scratch-match ritual where the opposition captains got alternating selections from the class. Hopefully he'll get over the humiliation soon enough.

Yeh we're taking a pretty big gamble that he's not going to make it at AFL level. We passed on a few young guys who probably could have developed for 2 seasons with the Legs. I would have preferred a tall though.

Yep - apologies, my mistake. I thought your original post was in response to mine about some teams passing up on Grose as he was a tall and those clubs I mentioned needed tall plyers IMO. Since re-reading your post I see (and agree) with your post.
