Current SANFL vs. Current Cricket Comparison/Analogy

Postby BPBRB » Wed Jan 03, 2007 2:14 pm

Not sure if this belongs here, the cricket forum or the general discussion forum but I'll let the moderators etc decide.

If we use the current SANFL standings in terms of recent years compared with the current Ashes and world cricket standings (Test only) taking into account being liberal in terms of years etc and tests played against Football games played etc etc, this is how I see it (A very lose analogy/comparison):

Centrals = Australia. Both been on top of their games for sometime and after years of dominance both got surprised (Aussies in 2005 and Dogs in 2006). Now Australia back on top in cricket will this mean the Dogs regain number one spot in 2007 – very likely.

Eagles = England. Both been around the mark for a few years, good against others but both generally dominated by one team in particular, Australian in the English case and Centrals in the Eagles case. Both produced recent shocks, Poms winning Ashes in 2005 but fall back the very next time around. Eagles win flag in 2006 but the unknown is can they stay at top or as mentioned above, will Centrals reign return this year and turn the Eagles into "England" – once in a blue moon success?

As for the others it is a little harder to compare them to cricket sides so someone else might want to try? I will have a stab at Sturt and West based on last year, both could qualify at various stages of being either Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. You can make your own minds up on that analogy?

Sturt won a premiership in 2002, so not sure that they could be either Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. To be fair - we probably don't have a straight comparison for these cricketing nations.

Sturt would be closer to the West Indies. Great tradition, and one recent success each (2002 GF for Sturt, and Champions Trophy for WI). However, they have both struggled in recent times as well - and off field issues have dogged both Sturt and WI.

agreed max Sturt are the West Indies once unstopable but now have some issues.

North would have to be India- look the goods but fail to deliver when the crunch comes

Very true  - except India are good at home and hopeless away whereas North are opposite in recent years, been great away but average at home. Finals is a different issue, definately failed to deliver under pressure.

Nah, I'd compare Sturt's 2002 Premiership more to Sri Lanka that time they won the World Cup!
...Just come outa nowhere!
Mind you, that was a dodgy series with both Australia & the Windies forfeiting matches due to
civil unrest in the winning nation!

Yeah good call Snaggletooth, a touch of SL about Sturt in 2002, If anything we're the Windies, a former dominant power in the competition that has done jack sh!t since 1995.....

Our last good year was 1999 coincidently the year the Windies drew 2-2 with Australia.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Snaggletooth - the comparison between Sturt and Sri Lanka doesn't wash. How do you explain the successes of Sturt in the 60's? SL could barely get a team to beat the Redbacks back then!

But Australia is undefeated, with one draw, since the last ashes test and England have been up and down.

Not exactly sure how a football club that has won just 3 premierships could be considered a former dominant power :?

I'm speaking about it as a one off 'sall!
After Sturt were bottom dwellers for so long thru the 90's 'til they won the flag in '02.
Yeah, they played Ports in a losing Grand Final coupla years previous!
Just a bit of sarcasm... ya dig?

Eagles - South Africa (Promise alot, deliver very rarely)

Centrals - West indies (Have dominated for a period of time, Gowans bros are greenidge & haynes)

Ports - Australia (Over time the real deal,,, and i hate the stinking magpies, now is the time kerry packers scripted cricket is in vogue, will return to the power mantle in time to come)

Norths - England (recruit all the other countries player :D :D :D but dont dominate like they should)

Souths - Holland (very cold up there in winter, havent performed in many years)

Glenelg - Pakistan (Very disfunctional at times within the side, have ability but struggle to perform under pressure "Graham Cornes is Inzaman Al Huq"

Norwood - Zimbabwe (Were on the way up but Magabi sold all there assetts and are a side without a home)

Sturts - India (Have a proud and passioate supporter base but the worst OVALS in the world

West - New Zealand (Have had lots of promising juniors but they never go on with it)

OK dominant power is maybe a bit off the mark, my point is like the Windies we were strong in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, but have been sh!t house since then...

Anyone have a problem with the sh!t since 1995 bit????

Funny stuff there Dasher.....
