Halbert for S.A Governor

Postby Sojourner » Wed Jan 31, 2007 1:15 pm

It was mentioned on 5AA this morning on the breakfast show that John Halbert is a potential candidate for Governor General of South Australia.

I dont know that we have ever had anyone ex SANFL in the role of Governor, maybe it might be a good thing?

not a bad idea.
a gentleman.
highly respected outside of sporting circles as well.

although some would critiscise the appointment of ANOTHER sports person.

Was mentioned at the SANFL media awards which might of been where Cornsey got it from, I think more as a joke as they were introducing him to speak but perhaps it had some truth to it.

There are a few candidates likely to be a long way ahead of Halbert.

If you rule out ex-politicians then you have to look at the next best option - a person who can bring profile to the position that will be complimentary to the sitting government's objectives. For example,

an old/current union official (Don Farrell or Peter Alexander)
a climate change guru (Tim Flannery - Aust of the Year this yr tho)
a philanthropist (Gordon Pickard)
A leader in education (a former vice chancellor of a University?)

Dont be surprised if another female appointment was made either. An outsider could be Felicity Ann Lewis - Mayor of Marion and a background in education at Flinders University, she is well connected.

The hot tip for the next Honorary Consul in London is Warren McCann, current Chief of the Premier's Department. The Premier owes him big time for a few 'get out of jail' cards he's been given by McCann.
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

I think either Barrie Robran or Russell Ebert would be an equally fine Governor for this state. Both out and out champions on and off the field, have done lots for the community, and are universally well liked.

It has to be somebody eminent in their field who is in retirement:

Feres Trabilsie
Lionel Williams
Ian Fairweather

or even.... Sir James Hardy. Not sure if he lives in Adelaide.

Or Dr David David, former head of the Cranio Facial Surgery Unit and 1966 District Cricketer of the Year (now Bradman Medal).

John Halbert was a champion footballer, better than any player that came from your club. Which club do you follow? Maybe you plant too many trees yourself and smoke them.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Seriously Sturt1 what is wrong with you? I never said Halbert wasn't a champion. Didn't get the humour in my post about planting tree's. The fact is he has one tree only and many others (including Ebert and Robran) have a few more to their name. Simple really when you have half a brain and it is all based on how many MM they have won. Got it yet?

Obviously you have never read any of my other posts on this site or is it you are the one who is affected by narcotic intake? Now for you with the one brain cell - I follow North so let's see how you can ramp up the arguement that Halbert is better than say.... ohh Robran for example?

Your reply should start an amusing response no doubt!

Was that okay tassie???

Sir Douglas Nicholls is the closest thing - he played for Fitzroy and Victoria in the 1930's. Professional athlete too.
