If Carlton were to play Central at Elizabeth, could Central win?
I think Central would come close and may well even knock Carlton off in that scenario.
Not that I have been lately yet I remember being at Elizabeth watching South get a flogging back when John Reid was coaching the club, we went out to the quarter time address and well if I had to say what he said minus the aggressive type swearing he wouldent have said much at all! Yet what he did have a go at the players about was that they were not playing the oval correctly and that they had to take more steps and run further with the ball if they wanted to be competitive.
For Carlton to beat Central at Elizabeth they would very likely have to adjust their game plan to win, that is where the opportunity for Central to win would come in.
Where Central could beat Carlton would be in taking shots at goal from outside of the the 50m line for goal. Put the forwards from Central 55 meters out and I think they would have alot more accuracy than most AFL forwards 55 meters out on Elizabeth Oval.
Thoughts?

My thought as a fellow Panther is Carlton by 60 pts plus. Just compare players in each position. Fev to Schell for starters, Davis to Gowans (both at once if you like) Even Ackers would smash the ruckman....

Seriously does anyone entertain the thought that any SANFL club could beat an AFL team? Given Centrals in recent years have been way ahead of other SANFL clubs and even if Centrals played at their very best they still wouldn't beat Carlton at their worst! The AFL teams are by virtue of being full time professionals are always going to be bigger, stronger and faster overall than the best club (Centrals) or clubs outside the AFL.

The last AFL game that I went too was Port vs the Crows when the Crows wore their adaption of the SANFL state guernsey that got various people annoyed because of the carry on about them wearing a state guernsey.
One of the reasons that was my last AFL game was the fact that for the whole game, not one goal was kicked outside of 50 meters from goal.
Put Centrals full forward 55 meters out on the angle for six shots and Carltons full forward 55 meters out on the same angle for the same and I think the doggies would make short work of Carlton.

I was asking a similar question a couple of years ago after watching a richmond match( orry don't know which one, but they were crap.) . I realy felt the Doggies were a stronger side.
The main problem is, The AFL run more, and are bigger than our lot. Even though I think alot of the SANFL players are more gifted than the average AFL player, they just don't have the height and speed.
So I decided NO!
Still I prefer the SANFL anyday.

Various Centrals sides over the past 7 years, would beat Various afl sides over the past 7 years.
not just Carlton, there has also been times they would give the crows and power a good run.
IMO the 2002 side would have the best chance.

Centrals wouldn't get within 20 goals. Consider the fact that Carlton lead the WC Eagles for a considerable amount of time in last year's game in Perth.

1 performance does not make a good side, keep in Mind Centrals few years ago had 4 100+ point wins in 1 season.

They wouldn't get close. They'd get smashed. The last era i think when SANFL teams would have gotten close to their AFL counterparts would have been the Glenelg/North/Port teams of the mid to late 80's.

Keep in mind that Centrals key playmakers, the Gowans couldn't stay on the Saints list, Schell struggled at Freo but dominates at SANFL level. Similar to Steinberner who was way out of his depth at AFL. Sorry mate, you're dreaming.

And didn't a nearly full strength Centrals team lose by 10 goals or more to the Crows (who had half their team filled with fringe players) in a trial game at Norwood Oval a few years back??? That should be enough proof to destroy your arguement.

Spot on GWW, those teams were strong, with a lot of players that could have walked straight into AFL (VFL back then) sides, as soon as the Crows were formed, the number of quality players that were willing to stay playing SANFL dropped dramatically.

Christ Sam, you are an optomistic one! Would be happy to get out with a 10 goal loss in a game against any AFL side, with any of the dogs sides of the last 7 years.
The most obvious point has already been made - the best dogs players were not good enough to hold AFL positions. If they were good enough, they wouldn't be dogs players.

fev would win hands down...he is dumb, but he can kick them from anywhere....
ive never seen shell kick a goal from outside 50, mainly coz he doesnt need to do much work at all against sturt backline the last few years
to answer this thread, carlton by 50+ points, easy, they would thump any snafl team sadly...

No SANFL team would get within 10 goals of an AFL team (maybe more), pure and simple.

Agree...anyone that thinks and SANFL team would get within 10 goals has lost some respect or lost someting else!!!
There is one reason why players play SANFL...they havent made AFL

Carlton 33.19.217 ( Maths dummy)
Dogs 2.3.15
Wouldn't work......
Maybe the dogs wouldn't score.....

Fevola would likely not play the game for fear of getting hurt! I am basing this on his attitude towards the "hard ball gets" statistic. One of the keys to winning if he did take the field would be to introduce him to how the game is played with physical contact at the SANFL level which likely would see him spend the the rest of the game on the bench.
Does anyone recall the occasion where Woodville West Torrens were invited to join the AFL preseason cup and thrashed Sydney in the process at Football Park?
