Christ, that's embarassing and their reserves couldn't even get close to 17 year olds either.
If scores like the 2 tonight continue it'll have a reverse effect in promoting the SANFL.

The worst thing is thought the Crows team was made up of a lot of 2nd stringers and rookies - blokes who predominantly play SANFL footy this year....Hinge, McIntyre, Sellar, etc blokes who played SANFL reserves last year......

IMHO thats not a good sign for Norwood in 2007. Noone would seriously expect Norwood to win and you'd accept a 10 goal loss but 30??? In a trial (especially the first one) you at least want to see blokes competing and showing a willingness for the contest that doesn't appear evident with a 30 goal thumping

However I do note the differences in personnel and resources that helps the Crows players prepare better in the pre-season.

For anyone who was there, did Norwood have key players out? Were the Crows players that much taller (i.e. structural defects last night for Norwood)? Deficiencies in the midfield so they just couldn't get a hold of the pill?

Not trying to be overly critical here but looking for the reasons why????

12:00 noon edit, apologies for stating Sellar played and implying Norwood was beaten by a team with several SANFL 2s players, finally got my copy of the 'tiser and found out he played for the U/18s.....My bad

I hoped that fans might leave the game encouraged about where the SANFL is going, yet it is likely that the reverse will be the case.

Both the TFL and the VFL have beaten the SANFL combined side in state games in recent years. It would be good to see what plans the management of the SANFL have to increase the standard of the SANFL competition. Yet go looking and you will find that there arent any, much less any plans for promotion of the competition - re C31.

It is time we had significant leadership change at the SANFL, it is time some new blood came into it that will try some new ideas and meet that challenges that are presenting themselves to the SANFL, rather than taking the attitude of backing away and watching the competition stagnate rather than keeping pace with the AFL as is the current situation.

The competition is cashed up and some of that cash needs to be put into resources for the SANFL clubs to draw on.

The Tassy game was before Port even entered the AFL and we did beat the VFL at our last attempt (in Melbourne) and have beaten them 3 out of 4 times in the last few years. (loss was 2002)

In five years time, the AFL clubs will have all made improvements and even though it seems hard to realise will be stronger, better and probably faster than it is now. Players are already training at a higher intensity and for a longer period than the game played at.

In five years time, will the SANFL have achieved a similar growth in skill level and fitness. will the game have evolved to a higher standard. Will the gap between the AFL Standard and the SANFL Standard be the same, less or more?

I take absolutley no joy out of this whatsover, so dont get me wrong, yet I think that the gap will be greater and will continue to grow greater. The VFL are working hard to raise the standard of their games and the influx of current AFL players playing in their competition will help raise that standard.

I reflected on why Hayden Skipworth chose the VFL over the SANFL, it is because he feels that he has a better chance of being drafted through the VFL than the SANFL. Currently SANFL clubs can pick off certain VFL players with an offer of more funds, yet if that should not be the case in 5 years time and those clubs are generating profits with pokies and funding of their own, that avenue will dry up and it is a good chance that the SANFL will become the third competition behind the AFL and the VFL.

Yet that does not have to be the result, I am quite strongly convinced that the standard of SANFL footy can keep pace with the raising standard of the AFL, yet the time has come for the management of the SANFL to be involved in that process to make it happen, not just to rely on the clubs to get better in the usual fashion.

Hayden Skipworth is 1 player who thought he had a better chance of getting in the AFL via the VFL.
There's dozens who have done the opposite.

Sojourner, your opinions are valid and interesting. Today I read with disgust about the AFL gobbling up the state leagues (AFLQ, AFLWA, AFLTAS) and heaved a sigh of relief that Herr Whicker has said 'hands off'. But the more I think about it, and reflect on the shortsightedness, general marketing ineptitude and Crows/Puffs-centric nature of the SANFL powers-that-be, well maybe the idea has merit.

If the AFL wants to give the SANFL (and by that I mean our state league clubs directly - not another upgrade of Footy Park lights, TVs, grandstands, train extensions, seats, scoreboards etc for dckhead Crows fans) bucket loads of cash and offer to manage and market it properly in exchange for changing the name of the comp and handing over some degree of control, then it's certainly worthy of consideration.

It sickens me to even contemplate our historic league being run out of Victoria but it virtually is anyway the way the SANFL is in bed with Demetriou & co. It's already compromised beyond belief. There are a lot of parallels to the current shape our river is in - if bringing in a central body with loads of cash and managerial expertise is going to save it, so long as certain safeguards are in place, then maybe it's the way to go. Couldn't be any worse.

How 'bout a combined side of all Crows Coach Neil Craig's old SANFL clubs Norwood/Sturt/North?

...Match'll still be a shambles!

I wonder what the score would be if CROWS played a combined AFL
team made up from the other 15 AFL clubs.

If greatly reducing the salary cap & turning us into an under 23 comp sounds fine, then sure- lets go ahead & give control to the AFL

Mind you normally Norwood dont put anywhere near their best side on the park either in these games. And every year the Crows win by 30 goals.

Waste of time really.

Was a lot closer last year:

Crows 19 - 7 121 d Norwood 8 - 7 55

How much closer would it have been if the entire team, instead of a third or so, had been from North Adelaide?

In some way, the SANFL will change to AFLSA. The competition may remain in name as SANFL (most likely to shut us up) but the administration of football will become AFLSA. The money on offer from AFL will become too hard to resist. This will happen in the next 2-3 years.
