should the sanfl give the goal and boundry umpires the authority to pay free kicks like in the afl nab cup?

Definitely not. The central umpire should be the only ones able to call free kicks. It will cause a huge **** up one day if continued with.

i agree....leave it to the 3 in the middle....which should probably be reduced to 2.

I think they should, every other world game allows the linesmen to make decisions as its common sense because they have a different angle on play than the main umpires..they should only pay the obvious frees that the field umpires miss...would make for a better game

Dutchy, in my opinion all of those games are shithouse to watch and that is part of the reason why.

so Soccer, Rugby Union & American football have all got it wrong?

If a boundary umpire sees a blatant throw why shouldnt he be able to call it?

All umpires can report a player - is that any different to paying a free kick? Would be interesting to see a goal umpire with a whistle!

I reckon if 3 umpires can't see it, then it didn't happen - I don't think we should be aiming for perfection. The players cock it up from time to time, so do the umpires.

To answer the last question... Yes they have. Crap games to watch, IMO.

I think it should be changed so there's 4 boundary umpires and they do have the power to call frees when the main umpires dont see it, it allows the central umpires to situate themselves down the corridor as opposed to nearer the boundary like they currently do. It would allow for more angles to be covered and if the sun's in one umpires eyes it wont be in the others.
It was trialled at the North v West trial game last year and despite being new for the umps and being early in the season it was the best umpiring exhibition I'd ever seen at SANFL level.

Agree Wedgie....why not give them the power to ONLY pay blatant free kicks...it works in other games...surely it only makes the game better and reduces the cheating???

3 umpires on a footy field cannot see everything with 36 players....look as Basketball they have 3 for 10 players and a much smaller playing arena...

So the 3 biggest games in the world have got this so wrong and a terrible to watch???? open your mind son

Further to Wedgie's suggestion, why not have 5 central umpires? One central umpire to do the corridor, and the other four to act as boundary umpires from the wing to the forward pocket, and umpire in a quarter of the ground. I've never been fond of the 3 umpire system, simply because it's not utilised properly.

I'm not sure if I've explained myself too clealy here :)

I guess what I am saying is you would have 4 boundary umpires, each one would officiate (pay free kicks, etc) in the area from FF to centre, and across to the wing. The 5th (or main umpire) would be a floating umpire who would help out in all 4 quarters of the ground, thus creating a 2 umpire system all over the ground. IMHO, the 2 umpire system worked better than the 3 umpire system.

I see where your coming from AH. With that system there is no need to find more umpires as the current numbers would cope. The SANFL can't cope with a system that requires more umpires. They are looking at using 3 boundary umpires rotating like the AFL but are short on numbers from my understanding. I have long said that the current 2 boundary umpires can not keep up with the pace of the modern game. My preferred model would be 2 field, 4 boundary with the boundaries having the power to award blatant frees.

Will you people please stop referring to them as Central umpires. They are field umpires, definitely not CENTRAL umpires, as the umpire hasn't been born that ever favoured Centrals.

Remember Whyalla!

Remember umpires that think trains signal the end of games! When in doubt free kick to Port in the goal square etc etc...

We don't want boundary & goal umpires paying free kicks as we don't have enough field umpires up to League standard as it is.
eg Richard Williams, Tony Dey, Craig Doddridge, Theron Philp.

the only reason why the linesman, or 'assistant referees' as they are now called, can flag a free kick is because there is only one referee on the field, who quite often can't keep up with play. With 3 umpires on the field that isn't (or at least shouldn't) be a problem.
Linesmen giving frees is bullshit. They either give a free for every tackle or they give f%$k all. The either think they are the ref and try to run the game from the line or they are mice and look to the ref for everydecision. All of this just creates confusion and frustration for the fans. IMO giving more power to the linesmen is a stupid idea and before long we will end up the officals being the centre of attention instead of the players. Some umpires already think the fans are there to see them and not their team already without creating more prima donnas.
