Ugly game in which neither team made use of a gusty cross-ground wind. But in patches, South showed with their running & linking game that they will be a threat to some of the top sides this year. At times they were very very impressive and after seeing WWT last week would say they are ahead of them at the minute. Trial games only, I do realise.

Sturt seemed to revert to some old habits early in the game, bombing into the forward line, where Chambers was the only target on offer, and hoping for the best. They improved as their midfield picked up and a couple of new players, John McDonald and Jason Turner really impressed, McDonald's skills looking particularly silky at this time of year. Also like the look of Darling, Avery, Jaensch and Alex Lee (Power).

Lee's bulk stands out in a team that is lacking real height at the moment. We are capable of getting more out of our big men but we really need Bowen and Coad to fire (they didn't yesterday) and get McCleay and Brooks back into the side. Jeremy Johncock in the reserves is built like a brick s***house and could also be a solution to our lack of talls.

Good to see Eckers back in the 2s yesterday also.

Noticed Sticks Phillips watching the game... a penny for his thoughts...

I noticed one of Port's AFL rookies, Hardy, named as best for Sturt in the Sunday Mail. May be a reasonable player for the Double Blues.

Anyone who saw the game, got an opinion on this young lad?

Looked a good footballer GWW, as did Alex Lee the other port lad. How ever big Fabian should be taking the SANFL apart and he is far from doing that.

Thats disappointing about Deluca Sturt1. Hopefully with game time, he'll improve and prove himself to be a decent footballer, jury still out though unfortunately.

With the Double Blues problems up forward, especially CHF, perhaps Lee may well be the solution there (i guess the other alternative would be for Chambers to go to CHF and try Lee out at FF).

Was there anyone from the Sunday Mail at the game, or did that come from a phone call to the coaches as well.

Wasn't able to attend but speaking with a Sturt Veteran on Sat night, the feeling is extremely positive out Unley way.

Rick is playing his cards close to his chest and good on him for that because Trial results mean fa come the start of the Year.

Sturt will play a Major role in the 5 despite all of the pessimistic thoughts. :) :)

i dont think sturt will be near the 5, they may cause an upset or two but feel they are not going to beat the top sides regularly enough.
they didnt have a system in place that could hurt teams, who knows maybe rick will have a different game plan to go with but they didnt look anywhere near potent enough to kick a big enough score. if south hadnt have stuffed around with the ball so much the margin would have been a lot higher

..... And IF the Blues had converted some easy chances, both on the run and set shots, the score may have been a little closer. Sturt had plenty of the footy and more inside 50's than South but the delivery was very ordinary. If Rick can get them to tidy that up he will have something to work with.

And IF my Aunty had balls she'd be my uncle....

and IF Ben Mules had kicked a goal instead of a point last year at the Bay agaisnt North....

and IF I had done an extra hour of study each night at high school / uni......

and If Peter Carey hadn't been rubbed out by Argent in the Qualifying final of '84

and If Des Foster in the 78 .......

If you are relying on IFs it doesn't bode well for a good year for any club

For mine the most damning post that Sturt are in for a long year.....

Given the fact I was highlighting the fact BJ Ernest was using "IF", that reply, Tassie, is one of the more stupid ones I have seen.

Read it again.

No ifs or f offs about it, Sturt will make the 5. We have a good side and we will play FINALS.

Be careful mate
I thought I could walk on water once upon a time as well.

Seriously under MACGOWAN they will improve but not this year.
They will be happier for sure.

sturt will make the finals when they have more than one forward that can actually kick goals.
too much reliance on brant chambers, but its not there only weakness, just an obvious one, when they get a few injuries, which sides always do they will drop away quickly

Just a tip, when water is frozen it becomes ice. The ice arena is proof of that. Walking on water is possible.
