My competition would run the following way:
WEEK 1-two teams play off for a spot in the last 8 with other 7 doing as they please
WEEK 2- Quaters
WEEK 3- Semis
WEEK 4- Final

With nine teams, it could be difficult.
The only way it could work -- IMHO anyway -- is to have three games a weekend with three teams sitting it out each weekend. That way everyone plays two games each. It could work like a round robin tournament where the top four performing teams play each other for a GF spot in Week 4.

well not sure what format but they need something with a bit of meaning to it....even if they just had a ladder and a prize/sponsor for it with a name...that would be better than now.

As I mentioned in another thread - a 32 team State Leagues preseason knock out comp (9 SANFL 9 WAFL 13 VFL & 1 NT) over 4 weeks with the majority of matches played as double headers with AFL NAB Cup games. NAB's money could be used to sponsor both the AFL & State Leagues pre-season comps.

Looking for more sponsorship? Might as well have rocking horse shite up for grabs.

Will the matches be played at Gumeracha?

Four weeks? If it was 16 teams, probably... wouldn't it be five weeks with 32?

I VOTED YES BUT I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD BE A KNOCKOUT FORMULA BUT A ROUND ROBIN FORMULA, WHICH THEY DID IN THE 80'S & FOR THE BYE I'D DRAW IT OUT OF HAT &/OR GIVE 1 POINT FOR THE BYE

I'd like to see the premiers play against the premiers of the WAFL, VFL and QFL in a separate competition, leaving 8 teams to complete a knockout format pre-season comp.

that would work but wouldn't the sanfl premier dominate every year

Aerie - I like your idea but it means that fans of teams like South and West might only get 1 chance in their lifetime to see their team play Subiaco! I thought I'd be fair and give all State League teams a chance to display their talents on a national stage and give their associated sponsors some national exposure.
Dogsbody - Yes you are correct - The opening round of 16 matches between the 32 teams could be played over the 2nd and 3rd weekends of February using as many night time venues as possible in SA,VIC,WA & NT - Nwd oval for example could host double headers on Friday & Sat nights of those weekends. I would like to see the Grand Final of the State Leagues Cup be played on the AFL "Weekend Off" - gives the media chance to build up this game without AFL distractions and I think a North Adel v Subiaco Grand FInal at AAMI on a Sat night (the AFL-free Sat night) in March with the appropriate publicity could attract a 10,000+ crowd.

I would vote for a meaningful pre-season competition but would prefer it to be a round robin comp with semis and grand final to finish off.

I dunno the 9th placed SANFL team got beaten by a team that finished no higher than ninth last year in the VFL, if you draw a linear line through that......

My 5c worth
1) Split 9 clubs into 3 groups based on previous year finish (1st, 4th, 7th) (2nd, 5th, 8th), (3rd, 6th, 9th)
2) WEEK ONE, WEEK TWO, WEEK THREE - Each team plays 2 games round robin in their group, and has one week off
3) WEEK FOUR - SEMI FINALS (Winner Each Group, and best 2nd place team) / Other trials involving teams out of contention plus Tassie
4) WEEK FIVE - FINAL (Semi Final Winners) / Other trials involving teams out of contention
End of day - teams play 3-4 trials and has 2-1 weeks off
Each team gets one 'home", one "away" game in round robin games. Semi (Double Header ?) @ Theb, Final @ Coopers (Fri under lights)
Again My thoughts only.

Week 4 should be the team on top of each group plus the next best team based on best %age.

That's not a bad idea Phil.
To put up a different view, do we really need as many trial games as we already have? Why not start the season two weeks earlier and have the first round on the weekend there is no AFL on? Yes, we would need to schedule games away from the cricket ovals, but we do have Thebby, Norwood, Elizabeth, Noarlunga and Richmond available so that shouldn't be a problem.
