just looking over the 'A' teams for each side and ive noticed the type of recruits that teams like port and the dogs have picked up and going just by these teams and some trial form, they look certain to be up there again this year. I know its silly to pick favs just from these aspects but port definitely look the goods on paper to be thought of as flag favourites for 07.
thoughts people???
its footy season!!! bring it on

I reckon Port have looked the goods on paper for the last few years, but it hasn't served them that well by seasons end ... I have them right up there but will wait until I've seen every team play before I suggest who I think will take the title ... Can't see it being anyone outside of the following teams though (as Im sure most would think):
Eagles (Still a great starting 21, depth looks a little shaky though)
North (Great list, plenty of hunger I'd say too)
Central (Great list improved by quality recruits, just need the older legs to be able to run season out properly)
Port (List as you've mentioned and Magpie spirit always put them in the hunt)
South (Hard to predict as history invariably suggests it doesn't happen, but they also have a great list capable of beating anyone)

good post CP and yeah port have had a fair list on paper in the past but the recruits they have added this year just look as tho it might put them over the top and really give it a shake....then agian, its only on paper so....
with north....i say they have this year to really have a crack at the flag otherwise the hunger, desire, watever you call it may slip away if they 'choke' agian....in 07 they get alleway for the season and 1 or 2 others back that missed a lot of last year and with a few ex afl boys back they are primed to go no. 1.
the dogs as i said and the eags are up there again.....i see these 4 teams as the only real challengers this year....def going to be a massive season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe a Norwood fan has fallen for that 'Magpie Spirit' carp. They haven't won a flag for eight years so I'd suggest the spirit you speak of might have been watered down a tad over the years. Perhaps by a dash of teal?

Don't remember 88 mate? (and 89, 90 etc)
Should Port make it to the final dance mate, their army of supporters generally prove a pretty useful 23rd man ... Anyway, enough about them, Go the Leggies!!

Constancy,
I reckon nobody fears the maggie spirit like they used to. They are gonna have to earn it back. However there is no doubt a 100 years of success and the prison bar jumper is mentally worth a goal or 2 in finals.

I reckon come GF day Dash if the Magpies are there the opposition would fear it more so than any other teams spirit.

*Ahem* this is the SANFL, making their supporters the 22nd man, unless you are counting their heads twice!

FFS mate, one minute you suggest the Port Adelaide as we know it cant take the tradition/spirit with it into the AFL,then, then you suggest the Magpie no longer has it? One or the other please.

Centrals have made the last 7 grand finals. On this basis I think North are lucky to be equal favourites with woodville.
I would say Eagles and Central equal favs with North (a lot to prove) 3rd close behind. North have lacked hardness in the middle and were bushed aside by West Torrens and the Dogs when it mattered last year and I cant really see where that will change unless the younger Martin, Millar and Cubillo come to the party regularly. Of course Howard is better on the park than in the grandstand. Will Hart and Sporn help fix defensive issues? Will Brett White get fit?
Centrals have built a winning culture in recent years and I think they are deserving of carrying the hunted tag still. Central will miss cochrane, mcabe and scoullar however I reckon they are at worst breaking even after recruiting and the expected improvement of a guy like Westhoff.
Ports advantage is they dont fear the dogs and play well against them. Remember in 2005 they knocked off Woodville in a final somthing North havn't done yet. Baird a huge loss. If Hargraves can play full forward ok having waterhouse roaming will be a great asset. As usual the Magpie spine looks good. Possibly Scott Stevens to add to it at some stage too.
South well who knows........ They have the potential to be top 3 and you would think recruiting sees them ahead of last year.
PREDICTIONS:
I cant see North or West Torrens doing much better than 16-4. However the other 3 contenders would be hoping for minimum 12-8 which is equal or better to last year. Once again make sure your top 3 and go from there. Very even and too close to call, injuries will play a part.
My minor round favourites is North and Centrals.

What I'm saying is that the 'Port Spirit' is a myth. I don't believe they have any more or less spirit than other clubs. The reason I brought the teal into the equation is that they haven't quite been the same fearsome force at local level as they were before the advent of the Power. I'm not talking about tradition, the Magpies certainly have that..I'm talking about a mythical spirit that elevates the Port Magpies above, say the Bulldogs. Sorry mate, I just don't believe in spirits.

No. They're Port, we hate them. They are the ones that are confused. The only difference between now and 1996 is that there are twice as many teams to hate that win a hell of a lot less premierships.

you really do hate port dont ya mate i see that you are still waiting for the year of the cat well it has been the year of the pussy for years and years down at geelong and atleast most people can remember ports last premiership. You keep on swinging that hand bag Rik E Boy who knows one day you might even have some credibility in the premiership conversation

A cliche and an arse. A typical Port Adelaide rebuttal?

To be honest, I reckon it's gonna be an Eagle/Peckers versus Chooks Grand final...
As far as the outright Premiers are concerned... anything can happen on the day!
...as long as
THE MIGHTY BAYS take it to 'em in the lead-up!
