R1: Port v Norwood review

RESERVES

Norwood has come away with an easy 6 goal victory in the early game at the Parade tonight.

Norwood kicked the first 6 goals of the match to create a match winning lead by 1/4 time. Despite the Magpies kicking 6 goals in the second quarter, the match as a contest was never in question.

The Redlegs were too skillful and took full advantage of their forward entries, whilst Port looked sloppy and slow.

Regular league players Tim Nicholas and Mitch Sandery led the way for the Legs, whilst Rob DeJongh kicked 4 goals up forward. It was Iggy Vallejo who stole the show however, with his dancing feet causing havoc throughout the midfield. He picked up possesions all over the ground at will and ended with a goal in the last quarter.

For the Magpies, Roc Harry was best on ground, whilst Wes Bilney (3 goals) and Julian Wait (4 goals) played well.

LEAGUE

A 7 goal display from AFL superstar Warren Tredrea was the catalyst for the Magpies comfortable 29 point victory at the Parade tonight.

The Magpies kicked 9 unanswered goals from late in the first quarter through 15 minutes into the 2nd quarter to break out to an eventual match winning 8 goal lead. Tredrea kicked 4 in the 2nd quarter in a dominant display from the multiple All-Australian. Playing on fellow Power teammate Nick Lower, he led strongly to the ball and if he failed to mark he was often given a free due to scragging.

Whist Tredrea finished well in front of goal, it was the work of two of the Magpies unheralded midfielders which was most impressive. Mark Dolling (7 games) and Steve Summerton (5 games) dominated in the midfield which would have impressed the Magpies coaching staff no end. Mark Dolling ended with 3 goals and Summerton 1, but it was there supreme skills and endless run which caused headaches for Norwoods midfielders.

Despite the score blowing out early in the match, Norwood were not disgraced and kept working hard until the final siren. Three times they kicked multiple goals to cut the margin back and had cut a 48 point margin early in the last quarter back to 23 points with 10 minutes still to play. An unlikely victory was suddenly on the cards. Goals to Brent LeCras (3 for the night) and Jeremy Clayton (also 3) steadied the Magpie ship as they went on to win by the final margin.

Port at times over did the handball and backed off the gas too much to allow Norwood a sniff for periods of the second half, but the coaching staff would overall be plaesed with what they saw. They look a more even side than last year and even when Tredrea was off the field they had enough targets up forward to threaten the scorers.

Norwood showed glimpses of excellent form but will need to look at how they let Port kick 7 goals in 10 minutes to begin the 2nd quarter to effectively finish the contest off there. Their midfield was comprehensively beaten on the night.

As mentioned, best for the Magpies were Mark Dolling, Steve Summerton and Warren Tredrea. Brent LeCras kicked 3 goals in a tireless performance across half forward, whislt Kyle Jenner and Harry Miller added spark in the Magpies forward half of the ground.

Norwood were best served by James Gallagher, whit jamie Vlatko made the most of his chances up forward kicking 4 goals. Scott Borlace started well, whilst Chad Gibson had glimpses of potential if he can stay fit this year.

PA 5.2 / 13.2 / 18.6 / 22.7 139
NW 4.2 / 7.5 / 11.7 / 17.8 110

BEST:
PA: Dolling, Tredrea, Summerton, Meiklejohn, J Clayton, Jenner, Perry, LeCras
NW: Gallagher, Vlatko, Bartemucci, Brunoli

GOALS:

Very pleased with that result to start the season. Very even performance by the Pies. Winners on every line and not many didnt have much of an impact. Will be keen to see how we go next week without Warren there. I dont think much should change.

The form of Dolling, Summerton and Jenner really did please me. The first two look to have really come a long way in the pre season. Meiklejohn has improved out of sight since he first came over as well.

Crowd was really good. Looked dissapointing for a while but they piled in late and it wa fairly packed in.

Id also like to mention that playing Nick Lower on Tredrea is one of the most bizarre coaching moves ive seen in a long time. Not just to start him on Tredders, but to leave him there most of the night was just ridiculous. As a Power supporter, I really hope he isnt played on blokes Tredders size all year, his AFL career will be gone if thats the case.

Magpies show they have the power

DOUG ROBERTSON

Article from: The Advertiser

THE Port Adelaide Magpies kept the fires burning and the spirits high with a 29-point win over their most bitter enemy Norwood to open the SANFL season at The Parade last night.
Inspired by the Power's All-Australian AFL premiership forward Warren Tredrea, who booted 7.0, the Magpies drove a nail into the Legs' heart and signalled that Port will be an SANFL powerhouse this year.

The game had everything - a bustling 7168 crowd, with probably a couple of thousand dedicated Power fans there to watch Tredrea, chilling, physical footy, perfect conditions and it was even a red-hot contest . . . but only for one quarter.

Port was just one goal up at the first break but an unanswered seven-goal burst in the first 15 minutes of the second term tore the game apart and gave the Maggies a commanding 47-point lead.

Tredrea, initially matched up by Power team-mate Nick Lower but still dangerous in the first term, became the dominator with three goals in that match-busting run, mostly because of Port's dominance in the ball-ups and across the midfield.

Ruckman James Meiklejohn (28 hit-outs, six marks, 20 disposals) gave the Magpies' engineroom first look at the ball and Kristian DePasquale, Jeremy Clayton, Shayne Biacsi and Steve Summerton, 19, playing his sixth league game, revelled. Skipper Mark Clayton, Corey AhChee and to a lesser extent Kangaroos recruit Joel Perry kept the Legs attack rattled and repeatedly rebounded across the centre line.

The body clashes were tough and hard from both committed outfits but Port's ball skills were far superior, especially under pressure.

The famous Magpies-Norwood spite spilled over two minutes before half-time after Tredrea was awarded a touchy free for holding and the Legs players let their emotions boil over. Five Redlegs jumped onto Tredrea's back as he was on the ground, which stirred his Maggies' team-mates into a near frenzy.

Big bodies flew in and out of the melee while the umpires gave out a justified 50-metre penalty which presented Tredrea free passage to the goal-line and his fifth goal of the half. That put Port on track for a solid win, then a five-goal-to-one burst in 10 minutes to start the third quarter - including two more to Tredrea - gave Port a 58-point lead and virtually sealed the match.

Norwood fought it out, through Keiran McGuinness, who gave his all but made plenty of mistakes, Scott Borlace, Austin Wonaemirri, after he picked up the pace, and Jamie Vlatko, who kicked 4.2 from few chances, to come to within 23 points 15 minutes into the last quarter.

But it was all too late.

Tredrea back in lethal form

MICHELANGELO RUCCI

April 06, 2007 02:15am
Article from: The Advertiser

WARREN Tredrea is back - safely, strongly and surely to play AFL football next weekend.
Playing his first competitive match since knee surgery nine months ago - and his first SANFL game in 10 years - Tredrea last night kicked seven goals and set up another three as the Port Adelaide Magpies ran out 29-point winners in the SANFL season-opener against Norwood at The Parade.

The Port Adelaide AFL premiership captain now seems a certain starter in the Power's attack for Showdown XXII against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday week.

Tredrea, carrying bandages on both knees, started in a forward pocket against Power club-mate Nick Lower. He often ventured as far as centre, was placed at full forward in the second term and generally presented himself as a commanding option in the Magpies attack.

Most encouraging - considering Tredrea has had so much surgery on both knees in his 10-season AFL career - was how strongly the All-Australian forward ran and how sure he was in turning or leading to either side.

While Power coach Mark Williams watched intently from the western grandstand, Tredrea erased any doubt on his return from serious injury and silenced the ghost remembering his last game against Norwood was the Magpies' disastrous 1997 grand final.

Tredrea finished with 10 kicks, three marks, seven handpasses, 7.0 and a 5-5 free-kick count. For the record, Tredrea played all but six minutes of the first term when he had a break at the 15th minute. He had three kicks and one handball in this quarter, kicked one goal - his trademark wheeling onto the left foot from 45 metres - and assisted in two other scores for the Magpies.

Tredrea's second term - that involved a six-minute break at the 20th minute - was his most productive. He kicked four goals from five kicks (the third and fourth were free kicks), took two marks and offered a reflex handpass while storming through a crowded pack. He also had to put up with being at the bottom of a melee at the end of the second term when he was given a free kick - and after the stoush a 50-metre penalty advancing him to the goalsquare.

Norwood changed from Lower to the taller Kieran McGuiness and then Nicholas Jackman in the third term when Tredrea - playing the first 22 minutes - kicked two goals. He had two kicks (one free), held a strong mark and dropped two others and had two handpasses.

Starting the last term with his fourth opponent, Nicholas Duigan, Tredrea finished the game with a 25-minute burst. He was scoreless in the term, had one kick and three handpasses and set up a goal.

The magpies are going to be very hard to beat this year. When you consider there is half a dozen or so players that did not play for them tonight who are quality players, the likes of Waterhouse, Elstone, Murray, Hargraves, Looby, Eichner etc :(
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Any publicity is good publicity TroyGFC. By all accounts a great game, plenty of goals, good crowd (whether 2,000 were puff fans or not), Seems a good start to the SANFL season.

Lots of Power dummies there last night who on the hill would characteristically talk a whole lot of shite with their backs to the game, only pricking up their ears when the ball came to Tredders' territory. Their cries of "fifty!!!" every time their man got a free (and boy, Richard Williams gave him at least 3 goals on a plate) gave them away. Must have been at least a couple of thousand there to see him - Port's crowd was easily twice the size of the opposition, evidenced by the turn-out at the coaches huddles and the unintelligible repartee on the hill. Can't believe they are entitled to vote.

Top game though, the second quarter set it up for Port but Norwood were impressive after half time. Lesser teams would have given it away but they kept winning the ball. Sadly made me realise just how far my Blue boys are away from the pack. I wouldn't have been too disappointed as a Legs' supporter after that game.

Top write ups by Macca and Zip Zap LOL. Port were way too good out of the centre and that would be the reason behind that goal avalanche in the second stanza. Did Port take their foot off the gas or did the Redlegs lift their rating? This question is probably best left to those that saw the match. However, in all of the Port v Norwood matches I have attended I can't say that I have witnessed either side take the foot off the pedal when playing the traditional enemy. The closest thing I can remember to that scenario playing out was on our side of the fence on Anzac day when Norwood were twenty goals up and the Legs fans cheered a Hodges goal.

Legs good at times but Port the superior side.

regards,

REB

I thought Port was patchy. Turned it on for periods, then coasted. Had Port played at full throttle all game, the Redlegs would have been put well away.

Yeah I probably agree with Pseudo (good to see you there mate!)

When Port were in top gear they just dominated all around the ground and Norwood barely got a possesion. In the second half Port were quite patchy. Turned it on for 10 minutes then seemed to relax and think 'yea weve done enough' which let Norwood grab the momentum three times.

But it's fair to say Port eased up in the second half and it let us get some respectability back.
