Is it just me or do you lot reckon the Panthers drew the short straw in regards to the draw to open the season? They get the two best sides in the league at the ends of the Earth to begin their season. Did South Adelaide request the Encounter Bay venue for their match against the Eagles?

Yes they did request a country match, whether they asked for it first round, I couldn't tell you.

But yes, there is a fair bit of travelling there.

as DOGWATCHER has mentioned SOUTH have requested country games and they have done so in the past couple of years, and they are usually played near enough to the start of the year.

well if south are genuine finals threat this year then they should be able to be competitive if not win one of those games

Well, they certainly weren't competitive, let along likely to win on Saturday.
Let's hope they're neither again this weekend.

Thanks for the replies on this one lads. I'm not too sure that their year is over if they can't defeat the Dogs at Elizabeth this week though..especially coming from a Yabs man...

Certainly not over. But far from ideal.

it wouldnt be a good start for the panther to be 0-2 if they happen to lose this week at elizabeth but in having said that maybe they think they arent upto the Eags, dogs and maybe rooster but feel confident in beating the other teams every time they play them.

Yep, I'm sure that's how we've planned the season. We won't try against those three but win everything else.

Saturday's result was far from ideal but to suggest it's the beginning of the end for 2007 is a little silly. We now know we have a lot of work to do, not such a bad thing....

South have alot of work in front of them if we are to improve this season. I agree with the decision to swap a home game for a game in our country zone, despite the fact that we were beaten, it still gives us an opportunity to promote our club and SANFL football to the public, I would like to see the Panthers have a second club in Goolwa as well as other SANFL clubs having a base in their country zones and making them truly their own.

The result last Saturday was not great, yet the question that needs to be asked is if the current South Adelaide side have more in them to give and do we have the capacity to lift our skill level to the benchmark of the competition where Central and the Eagles are at. I think that we can, I think that South will improve steadily despite the loss and I still think that we have just as much chance of any of the middle order sides at having a red hot go at the finals this year.

The Eagles got teams that finished in the 5 in our first 3 games, in South, Port and Central.

The Eagles got teams that finished in the 5 in our first 3 games, in South, Port and Central.

The Eagles only have to play teams that finished below them last year. How easy is that?

The dogs have been programmed the bye in the last minor round. How dumb is that - to schedule a GF team as a last round bye. It should be the bottom team of the year that gets that - that way it minimises the risk of affecting the preparation of a team playing finals.

each team has to deal with that and it was just their turn this time....just the way it works....roy laird is a smart man, he will plan for it.

He'll plan for it by finishing between 2nd and 5th.

Altough I am an Eagles man ,I feel I should point out that last year the Eagles were 0-2 after the first two rounds .And I dont think the dog's were that flash either.
And at one stage during round 3 it looked like the Eagles would be 0-3 until they started to play footy .

Yes, the season is a long one. Some teams find form and others lose form. Port looked world beaters up until half way through last season. So did North. Eagles were ordinary at the start and Central didn't start playing the way they're known until the finals.

I think South will still be a threat. The important thing is teams find a way to win early in the season to make it easier to finish in the top 3 - because it's pretty hard to make a Grand Final from 4th or 5th.
