This is today's email from coach Ron Fuller to Eagles fans who have joined our free email sevice - details above re joining.

Hello and happy new football year to all of our supporters. It was good to finally get the season started and the result was enjoyable too.

I hadn’t been as disappointed as some with our trial form; in fact I thought it had got progressively better, so we were quietly confident of performing well against South. We knew that their expectations would be high. They had recruited a lot of experienced players in recent times and with the game to be played in their country zone, we expected a tough contest.

As I said our trial form had been such that after a sluggish first half against Sturt, a good first half against Norwood and the first three quarters against North being very good, it was gratifying to win all four quarters against South.

The contributions of club first gamers, Jonathon Lee, Adam Klun, Ben Schwarze, Craig Fitzgerald and Luke Duncan was also encouraging after a pre-season where we saw a lot of our depth players move on.Of course the form of Treeby, Powell, Passador, Grocke, Rugolo, Jarrad, McKenzie, Fiacchi, Lindsay and Cooper was an indication of their very good pre-seasons too. Steven Hall, Joe Pedler and Sam Fairclough have had solid pre seasons as well but they didn’t have quite as much to do as the other boys.

Young players like Nick Salter as well as Bernie Vince and Paul Stewart who have had AFL preparations just showed what building a solid foundation for your year could help achieve.

We look forward to all of those players building on it now.

It was a good first up win but I have always felt that the first game or two has little indication of the year ahead if you dwell on it and don’t look to improve. If we remember, we lost the opening two games last season. As such, the Port Adelaide game at Woodville Oval next Sunday has significant meaning to us now. I am sure Port feels the same, so a tough contest looms.

We hope to see as many of our supporters there for the first game at home in 2007.

Ron Fuller
