In one of the most bizarre blunders in SANFL football history
the North Adelaide Football club fielded only 19 players against the Norwood football club.
Brett OHARA and Timothy MARTIN did not play despite being in the team
It is understood that the NAFC only named 19 players on the team sheet prior to the game.
The team sheet was handed in and the 2 players were ruled out.
OHARA could be seen running around the boundary at the parade end during an early quarter
When I spotted OHARA at 3/4 time he was dressed in a suit and watched his team in the 3/4 time huddle.
Fortunately NA won despite the blunder
I beleive as the game commenced the blunder was noticed.???
In this day and age common sense should have prevailed and the 2 players should have
been allowed to play
I do feel for OHARA and MARTIN who thru no fault of thier own missed out on a game of footy

You're right in that you were wrong mal.
Apparantley North named O'Hara and Martin on the bench on the official team sheet, players possies were changed after a late team meeting and the Norwood officials insisted that they couldn't come back onto the ground. Apparantley its happened in the past quite a bit with the players just going on as per normal but they weren't allowed to.
No excuses, the North officials shouldn't have given the SANFL or Norwood officials a chance of making it an unfair game but in the end it turned into a real team binding effort for a club that was already listed by the bookies as underdogs before the game tonight.
North are definately having the last laugh and some Norwood officials will be feeling very low.

Just on mal's original title thread name, I couldn't agree more, there's nothing better than watching too open attacking teams play at the Parade, its so quick to go from one end of the ground to the other and there's so many "12 point plays".
Not a great oval for kids as no grass, etc but easily the best oval for the footy purist to watch a great game of footy in good conditions while enjoying the best brew in the comp.
Great to see David Wark there tonight, just goes to show the sort of guy he is in still going to a game like tonight when visiting family and friends.
Mind you when I asked him when he was going for tonight he did give me an evil smirk and a wink.

Yes, in 2004 when Central destroyed the Eagles, i think Daniel Healy missed the interchange and had to sit off the remainder of the game.

Sensational win by North, to win with effectively two less players than the opposition can not be overstated. Shows a lot of G&D which the players should be able to use as a reference point for later on in at the business end of season. Some might say it was only Norwood but given the way footy is played today with lots of hard running to be two players down is a huge disadvantage.

Sorry Mal rules are rules, if it was junior footy you'd let it go but this is league footy the 2nd best comp in the land (only on ability of the players best in everything else) if you want to change your interchange before the game starts you do it before the game commences let the steward know and viola.

Glenelg did it a few times when the Antrobus would start in the forward pocket - drag Gibbsy before the bounce and put on Scooter for a bit of niggle to put him off his game...

The Roosters almost nobbled their own hopes when two interchange players were ruled out of the contest at the first bounce because they had been named on the field on the official team sheet.

Midfielder Tim Martin and ruckman Brett O'Hara could take no part in the match after North's hierarchy started them on the bench after naming them in the starting 18.

That forced North coach Andrew Jarman to throw gutsy 192cm key defender Shane Schubert into the fray as a makeshift ruckman, leaving lofty Adam Cockshell (199cm), who kicked 2.3, and Robbie DeJongh (200cm, 3.0) free to dominate overhead in attack without any North defender able to counter their extreme height.

A very unprofessional error by the North coaching and football operations people. Jars made light of it at presentations after getting out of jail with the win.

But let's just say a number of North officials are "seething" at Norwood who under the rules, and when asked by North to allow the players to play, refused to do so. Regardless of the blunder by North officials, Norwood are now a club so racked by desperation that they have lost the plot when it comes to an even playing field in terms of sportsmanship and fair play. In the end with all the odds stacked in their favour they still couldn't win after dominating for a good 2 quarters against a side with 1 bench player and we had already fielded a team nowhere near full strength and with one of the shortest and most inexperienced defensive 6 that I can ever recall.

After being told that Norwood refused North's request I though it was appropriate "Karma" that their bad kicking kept us in front and ultimately allowed us to guts it out and win after a great last quarter.

On the game, disappointing that we actually refused to allow the North players to play, everyone will have their own opinions on it and thats fine, but for mine it's disappointing and something I'm not proud of.

On the game, North just too good ... Got the result they deserved through superior efficiency and cleaner skills when it counted.

As a Norwood fan looking toward the bigger picture, I wasn't too upset last night, I thought we showed we have a bit of quality to work with, it just needs further developing and the right infusion of quality recruiting (if we can manage that) ... To keep a team as powerful as North down to 7 goals in 3/4's of footy is not a bad effort.

Well done to North on their win ... Punk, BP, Wedgie and Co., I tried to find y'all after the game, sorry I missed you, catch up next time around and congrats.

Well said CP, sorry I didn't catch up with you, I did find Manny when I walked in but after that proceeded down the other end.

You make the comment that you're disappointed and not proud of Norwood's actions, and fair enough, also if I was a Norwood player it wouldn't give me a good message that team management didn't have the faith to want to battle North on even terms (despite being favs with the bookies and home), it'd be a real kick in the guts.

As an interesting aside Chris Scott was at North's presentations on Friday Nights, talk is injuries permitting that he might be lining up for North next year.
Dunno if we can afford another older player with recent history of injuries but if he did make it out on the park would be a great acquisition.

Sorry I missed you too CP - but you should have done a "Joffa" and ventured to the Northern end!

Your comments about the I/change are exactly what was discussed by a number of North officials after the game including those responsible for the debacle if the boot was on the other foot. Despite the polite "Norwood were within their rights" comment in todays Sunday Mail by James Moore (typical public statement), I can tell you that the North hierachy are still seething. Still it is done and dusted now so we will move onto to next week.

Norwood were impressive Friday night - after being a smallish line-up last year they have a good spread of height this year especially up forward and they will stretch everyside they play and if they learn to kick straight (after catching the North inaccuracy "yips") and with the intensity they showed Friday night they will win more than they lose.
