RESERVES

The Magpies have slumped to yet another defeat, this time succumbing to the Panthers by 10 points in an entertaining match at Alberton Oval today.

Leading by one goal at the last change, South hit the front early in the last quarter with two quick goals. The Magpies could only manage three behinds for the quarter, despite the ball being in their attacking half for the majority of the final stanza.

It was a see-sawing contest which saw South start strongly with the aid of a steady breeze, before the Magpies hit back in the second quarter to lead by 8 points at the main break. Both clubs kicked four goals in the third quarter before the tense final quarter.

Best for the winners were James Boyd, Chad Norsworthy and Simon Munkara. Ben Squire kicked 3 goals, each coming in the third quarter, whist Sam Elliot was busy all day in the midfield.

First gamer Michael Clinch was best for the Magpies, whilst Adam Pepe and Aaron Christmann made an impact when they came onto the ground.

The Magpies are still yet to win a match this season and will again rue missed opportunities when the match was there to be won.

SENIORS

The Magpies have celebrated captain Mark Claytons 200th match in style, posting a hard fought 20 point victory against the Panthers.

The inspirational Port leader kicked a crucial last quarter goal to stem the momentum South Adelaide had built up in the previous 10 minutes. Trailing by just 7 points, Clayton took a strong Mark in the goalsquare and kicked truly to give the Magpies the victory.

The match started with South posting the first three goals of the match. Josh Maddox kicked two in quick succession almost immediately after the first siren, whilst Nathan Twomey marked and kicked strongly. Steve Summerton and the first of Clive Waterhouse' four goals pegged the margin back to 5 points at the first break.

The second quarter was tight with neither side getting a clear advantage. LeCras opened the scoring for the quarter before Kenna and Williams kicked South back into a handy two goal lead. Daniel Hargraves marked on the half time siren and kicked an excellent goal from a tough angle for his first for his new club. He put the Magpies in front by 4 points at the main break.

The third quarter saw the Magpies waste many chances in front of goal for the third week in a row. They kicked 3.8 for the quarter compared to Souths 2.3. Straight kicking could have seen the match over by 3/4 time. However, the Magpies went into the final quarter with a 15 point lead.

Daniel Hargraves third goal gave the Magpies a 20 point lead and it looked like they would go on with victory. However, a spirited South comeback saw them kick two quick goals to Kenna and Troy Jacques which pegged the margin back to 8 points at the 15 minute mark. With all the momentum, South took three marks inside 50 in the next few minutes but squandered the chances, kicking two shots out on the full and the other a behind. The ball then went down the other end where Clayton kicked the steadier.

Mark Dolling snapped a goal on the final siren to take the margin out to the final 20 points.

Clive Waterhouse, Corey AhChee and Tom Carr were best for the Magpies. Clive had a great match up forward, taking a number of strong marks and kicking four goals. Corey was his inspirational best at Full Back, whilst Carr was inventive off a back flank. Steve Summerton continued his great start to the season, whilst first gamer Levi Greenwood showed great potential off a wing all day.

Best for South were smalls Stephen Kenna and Dylan Williams, whilst Cory Mcgrath and Josh Thewlis had solid matches.

Didn't they celebrate his 200th game with a loss to Glenelg?

That was his 200th SANFL game (199 with Maggies, 1 state league game). Today was his 200th Magpies game.

Yeah, Joffa came to the Parade last night too, was barracking for North until the North cheersquad and grog squad abused him leaving him with noone to barrack for!
On the game today, I thought Levi Greenwood was awesome in his first game, Summerton continues to impress, Waterhouse is going to benefit big time from Hargs being in the square with quite often the best defender going to Hargs, leaves Clive loose to roam and run amock as he pleases.
Thought Hargs did a good job in his first game having limited time kicking 3, missing an easy one and having a big part in at least 2 others.
I enjoyed the game on TV.

Forget Clive and Hargs. I can describe where Port won in one sentence.

Ah Chee and Ben who?

Port defence was awesome.
South were shocking up forward , I felt sorry for the backmen and the guys in the centre busting their guts out when nothing was happening up forward.
We over used the ball. Look at our handball stats. Way to many handballs.

Disappointing result for us when we were right in it for most of the game

Good review Macca.

I thought big Meikeljohn might have got a mention, many of Summerton's clearances in the middle were a result of the big fellas work.He also ran as the 'link man' at times through the middle of the ground in the last quarter.Always funny to see a big bloke run past for the handball. He also kept Parry out of the game, with Parry being on of the more dangerous big men in the league.

Hargraves played a good foil for Clive,on a few occasions he stayed down to let Clive go for the ball, holding the dangerous Alipate Carlisle out of the contest,Carlisle can play.(I like the look of him Power fans)
Will give Hargs a new lease on life having to be a little more selfless to hold his spot.Dont try and get Clive to play the same way though.Clive must be one of the best one grab players in the SANFL.

Carr was solid across half back,Achee was,I agree BOG.Held plenty of grabs at crucial times,Prendergast got away a couple of times but smart forwards will always do that.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Disappointing effort from south. Had more than enough chances to win the game, especially in the last Q.

Thewlis was terrific. Goes in hard, kicks it long, passionate about his footy.

Apart from that, mentions to kenna, williams, Mcgrath and kingy.

Need more out of Handby, mcglone, warren and a fit archard, ellis and wright. The bye has come at a good time.

Huge game v the bays in a couple of weeks time.
