BRETT BACKWELL + AARON DAY

Great to see 2006 Magarey Medallist Brett Backwell back in action the last
couple of weeks after that leg injury.
Theres no doubt GL have missed him and results show this up
Noticed his stats on the round 6 game v Eagles

BACKWELL
19 kicks
8 marks
16 handballs

THE TEAM
158 kicks
84 marks
111 handballs

Brett had 35 possessions
The nearest other possession getters were FISHER + KANE 27 each

Brett did not make the advertiser best players in the 5 best players
Teenager Aaron DAY did with 9 kicks 6 marks 1 handball
Do journos rate a star player too highly and not acknowledge thier contributions ?
Did DAY play a better game then BACKWELL ?

Can anyone comment
And can BACKWELL win back to back medals ?

I thought Backwell was one of our best on the day.

Advertiser = shite

Unless bays start winning games, he wont win back to back medals

Mal, you should know by now not to quote DODGY Advertiser stats!
They missed 16 of the kicks and 37 of the handballs that we recorded! 53 missed possessions is not good enough!

Backwell had 40 possessions and Day 15. The issue isn't so much that Day didn't deserve to be in the best players, he was up amongst our best 6 or so, it was just that they somehow left Backwell out of the list.

If anyone cares, here is a much more accurate version of Glenelg's stats than you will find in the Advertiser.

Code: Select all
Kick-Mark-HB-Name
19   7   21   Backwell, Brett

PS Memo to anyone reading this who does the Advertiser stats at a Glenelg game:

Please don't bother attempting to record any stats (for either team) during the game, just enjoy watching the game and ask us for a printout after the game. I don't care if you still get paid, I just want to see accurate information in the newspaper!

I voted him second behind Kane on the POTY on http://www.snoutslouts.org. Not his most damaging 40 possession game - many were as a result of him running wide and the Eagles not manning up on him.

Dear Ecky,

Can you give the Eagles stats too, please.

Comparison for Glenelg is:

Team Glenelg: 174 k 82 m 148 h 322 p
Team Advertiser: 158 k 84 m 111 h 269 p

Saw Mouse briefly this morning, he was dark not to be in the best in the paper but even more peeved not to have any recognition at the club awards Sunday night. Because everyone expects mouse to have 30+ every week he only really 'did his job' where a young guy comes in competes a little bit and has maybe 12-15 is in the best because he played above his average, right? WRONG WRONG WRONG If Mouse or anyone else is the best player [not always stats based] then he should get the recognition; if he is GFC's best 17 out of 20 games so what acknowledge it!!!!!!!! David Noble & Billy Neely...

I really only follow each Eagle player closely and then a few of the opposition always stand out so I wouldn't be best qualified to comment on who was better out of Day or Backwell. For me, as I said in the match thread, I thought Kane was Glenelg's best player and Backwell was 2nd best. I don't remember Day.

Backwell is a good player, very clever, similar to Brett James. However, the Eagles were happy to let him gather kicks in the back half and as Ecky said, he got plenty of the ball, but wasn't damaging.

PS. FWIW Backwell should be more peeved about his team losing than not getting any recognition as a best player.

Hey Ecky, what's the full list of stats that you guys count for Glenelg? Do you do it on computers or the old-fashioned way?

Kicks (effective/ineffective)
Handballs (effective/ineffective)
Marks (Contested/Uncontested, Inside 50/not Inside 50)
Handball Received
Inside 50s
Hitouts (divided into centre bounce, ball up and throw ins)
Clearances (CB, BU or TI)
Tackle
Shepherd
Spoil
Smother
Hard Ball Gets
Loose Ball Gets
Chase Downs
Free For
Free Against
50m Penalty For
50m Penalty Against
Turnover (Midfield or not)
Kick Ins
Goal (Set Shot/ On Run / Snap)
Behind (Set Shot / On Run / Snap)
Out on the full (when kicking for goal)
Rushed Behinds

This is all done on computer. (I'm often the one who keys it all in - around 1800 transactions a game!)

Others do diagrams of inside 50s/kickins and what happens at each clearance.
2 guys also code up the video of the game.

Glenelg has been leading the way in terms of stats in the SANFL for many years now, (since before my time) thanks to a couple of very professional innovative Chief Statisticians (VV and Maxyoz) and a coach (David Noble) who was willing to invest in a great computer system.

I was at a South v North game a few years ago, was in the row in front of the Roosters stats guys. They were doing it the old-fashioned way, all on paper. While unsurprising since the job was difficult, it was incredible the amount of errors they made (eg kicks/handballs/marks/etc attributed to the wrong players). At one point the caller joked "ha I think we missed about five tackles in that last contest". Maybe they've switched to technology to record stats now, I don't know, but it certainly seems to be the easiest and most accurate way to record them.
