Did anyone else hear the interview with Leigh wicker on ABC (sat) about Tassie joining the SANFL.
The interview gave the impression that it is likely, if the AFL changes the structure of footy in Victoria.

I didn't hear the i/v but as I stated earlier this year it is very likely (more likely than not, I heard 90% likely I think it was).
Dont know what sort of time frame has been given so I'd be interested if anything was mentioned re that?

Leigh suggested 2009 at the earliest. Leigh also suggested that the WAFL should look towards NT.
The head of AFL Tasmania was also part of interview. He said they were flexible in regards to what year they can join. He added that Tas usually gets 5,000+ to VFL games.
What would they get if clubs people had heard of were in town?

Interesting point when an NT team was mentioned joining the SANFL .It was suggested that all EX NT players playing in the SANFL would/could play for the NT side.
Would the same rule apply for SANFL players for the tassie Team ie that are afl listed/ rookie players?

If they play 22 rounds in the season, I'm all for it. If there is only 18 rounds in the season, forget it.

I think that AFL Tasmania is using the SANFL as a bargaining chip as to get a better deal from the VFL.IMHO I don't think that it is likely that the Tassie Devils will be joining the SANFL and the way that the Devils are going in the VFL this year ,it wouldn't benefit the SANFL at all by having them.

Well said dan. Just like the NT talk - despite Tassie being a shorter flight (no direct flight either from Adel to Hobart or Launceston) there will still be significant costs each week. I just can't see who is going to fund it?

When the head of AFL Tasmania was on the KG's a month or 2 ago that was the impression I got too .... their strong preference seemed to be a side in the VFL and I felt that he was using the SANFL as a threat/negotiating point with the AFL/VFL. At that stage, he was mooting the concept but admitted he had not held even talked to the SANFL about it. Yet he had held several talks with the VFL. It's tied in with the AFL's review of what they call "second-tier" football comps around the country and there was talk about dropping Tassie out of the VFL.

excuse me, there is direct flights between Adelaide and Hobart. Virgin Blue are the only ones that do it. Qantas is via Melbourne or Sydney.
Its about $350 each way

It's cheaper to fly Perth-Melbourne (abt. $225 one way)!
The NT issue was raised recently in WAFL circles but only as a team taking part in a pre-season competition, which would tie in at the end of the NTFL season and the WAFL pre-season.
Cost factors will always rule out the chances of a NT side in the WAFL.
I also believe that the second-tier review was winding up ... it was mentioned last week or the week before that the WAFL was told that no changes would be forced upon their competition.

Scott Wade (head of the Devis) said Tassie would prefer the VFL. If the AFL reintroduces reserve grade the VFL will become a Third tier competition, which tasmania does not want to be part of.
Spelly: leigh said the SANFL would become 18 rounds

Well then, lets keep it as it is. I don't want to see two less matches of SANFL thanks, they already chopped off two after 1995.

I think with what Tassie would bring to the league - good crowds, greater exposure, fun travel opportunities, it's worth making a few alterations to accommodate them. True, cutting the season length would be disappointing, but we could cover that by keeping the bye and having enough 3 fixture rounds to pad the season out. You could even put most of the 3 fixture rounds in the middle of the season to minimise the impacts that july weather has on crowds.

I don't think it would work by padding the season out or having a shorter 18 round season while we're still associated with the AFL. The Crows and Power need somewhere for their fringe and young players to play each week.
I like the system as it is. There has been enough change to the SANFL since 1990 as it is. I think its a good time to settle and rebuild instead of trying to expand.

What are the changes that have occurred to the SANFL since 1990? I would have thought that the impact of the Crows and Port and the impact on crowds was the over-riding difference which must be addressed if the SANFL is to prosper.
