West Adelaide play Sturt twice before playing South and Centrals in the first part of the season.
Any other teams doing the same? Obviously Sturt are one.

This round coming up is Round 1 again.
Norwood play Port for the 2nd time and havent played Eagles and Glenelg yet.
North last week had their 2nd bye and Port hasnt had one yet. Therefore North 3rd on ladder, 1 point behind Port with 2 games in hand. Yes rediculous.

Later in the year Norwood play North at Norwood then 4 weeks later play them again at Prospect.

Eagles haven't played North or Norwood yet either. Not sure why they program matches as they do?

I suspect it's all because we have a 9 team comp over 23 rounds. If we expand or contract either the number of teams playing or the length of the season it would work out easier. I expect there's a policy in place regarding how many of the finalists from last season you play. For example it would be pretty rough for West to play Port, Central, Eagles and North 3 times while Glenelg got to play Sturt, South and Norwood twice. The AFL has a rule like that so the SANFl probably does as well.

Would like to know if anyone can come up with an alternate fixture list that doesn't have someweird events like described occuring.

Isn't it that over a 2 year period you play every team 5 times in the minor round? Doesn't matter if you're a finalist or not. I think that is pretty fair. This thread is more to do with why you play a certain team twice before you play some teams for a first time.

Hopefully when Modbury are admitted to the SANFL the problem should soon be sorted out! 8)

Bingo!!! give the man a bun! The 2 year draw is fair but the actual programming off the games early on seems to be all over the place with not alot of thought put into it? Apparently when a couple of clubs quizzed the draw (including North) the SANFL's response to increased Sunday games and the unusual draw early as pointed out was "That's the way it is" and they gave no other explanation which is very unprofessional but not suprising from the AFL bum licking SANFL hierachy.

Personally looking at the teams that are playing each other again before playing all of the others is an attempt by the league to get good crowds early on in the year when they think winter hasn't fully set in. E.G. Port/Nwd and North/Centrals although apart from the 2 night games at Hamra with North, the recent North/Centrals minor round games have got a lot less than expected crowds eg the 2 Adelaide Oval games last year got around 2,500 from memory.

How North got two byes within the first 7 rounds amazes me??? Surely with 3 byes for each club they could be evenly spread through a 23 round season along with everyone plays everyone once before repeating the cycle???

Can i also point out.

For the sake of attendance.

Centrals and South unless they finish in a GF against each other.

should not play each other three times in a season .surely the sanfl could work this out.
they arent going to attract big crowds purely thru location of the clubs.

south vs glenelg
centrals vs north
along with sturt norwood and port should all play each other 3 times every year to max out attendance.

If you do this you're following the lead of the AFL and selling out on fairness for the sake of a few extra $$$.

That was my thought too Aerie. I think the current program is reasonable, I am sure there are logistics involved that we aren't fully aware of that cause this to happen. But the SANFL always trot out the 'that's the way it is' line whenever questioned by clubs (as BPBRB stated earlier and as I heard from Centrals after enquiring about our games either side of ANZAC day in '06). Not sure what is wrong with explaining things to a club so that all understand.

Unless of course they don't give a crap about the SANFL competition...

... and honestly we aren't talking 1,000's of extra people that might be added to attendance figures if the SANFL changed South v Central match-ups ... not enough to warrant compromising the fairness

Having said all that, how many times have Port played Norwood the last 5 seasons?

OK that answers that ... I wondered if that was the SANFL's only concession to the standard rotation system
