David Kellett

Postby Grahaml » Mon May 21, 2007 1:11 pm

In the paper today there was a comment that Rick MacGowan needed a clone of himself in the middle. I think most teams need a clone of Rick MacGowan, actually, which made me think of David Kellett. A few seasons ago he was just about the most outstanding young prospect not AFL bound in the comp. Now he's kicking around in the amateurs I think. Would be a magnificent addition to any league club if they can get the desire out of him. I thought he could have been every bit as good as Ricky himself when he was coming through. If Jarman, MacGowan, Hill, Mickan, Weidemann, Pyman or Fuller are willing, I think this type of player would fit into their teams magnificently. Just a question of whether they're willing to put in the work for 1 player I think.

A good player, but I know some on this site don't rate him.

Would still have something to offer at league level.

Terrific player, top lad. Terrible attitude - the spiral he made after not being drafted when touted as potential top 10 pick was sad to watch. I think that speaks for his ability to play at the top level, any league coach would be making a big gamble by contracting him.

Burned it up at underage level. Double All Australian, touted as a top 10 pick. Only thing that held him back was the fact he had zero pace. I know a couple of scouts and both said he was the slowest non KPP theyd ever seen.

Could have still made it at SANFL level where his tricks would work better.

well if you ask Rick, he would say they need the oppositie

Leg speed through the middle of the ground and a Key Defender and another tall Forward

as good as a player Rick was, he had none of these qualities

Not all he 'burned up' - was a victim of the old '420', if you know your US codes...

You're accusing him of murder/homicide?

PS: Snappy Tom, you might want to be careful what you allege on this site.

You can't be referrring to US police radio codes as there is no 420. You must be full of shit instead.

If you are referring to the slang '420' that refers to smoking marijuana, then you are barking up the wrong tree - whilst he may have dabbled, it wasn't his downfall.

'old' 420 - read my original post. I care not if the list has been re-organised, but I know what 420 was in the list from 2002.
the list you are using isn't the code set I was referring to - but SMAC was on the right wavelength.
and, Dogwatcher, I have little to be concerned about...

In all seriousness, you make some good points here, smac.
He was really looking the goods for us - I'd swear he wore Ricky Macgowans shorts as well as his magic 23!
Was doing it all right until the broken hand incident in a night match at Adelaide Oval against Port (in 2004 from memory).
He had it all, but from the long-awaited comeback we never saw the mental or physical best of him.

I thought he was a terrific player, was disappointed to see him fizzle out of our side, and ultimately SANFL...

He's not the first, and won't be the last player with the talent that just never went on with it. Alas...

All this talk just reinforces my point. For a coach willing to put in the work, the risk may just pay off big time. Easily the most talented player I can remember walking away from league footy without ever making it.

Yep, know David and have done for years (since he was about 13-14 years old). It took a few years to take full effect but the change in his attitude was obvious and it started his demise.

Don't get me wrong, I am not criticising David. I reckon he was a 'victim' of the system and the press that he got - he didn't have the make-up to handle it properly.
