Jeremy Clayton - gutless act??

Postby HeartBeatsTrue » Sun May 27, 2007 12:13 am

Anybody else see this just before half time?

Matthew Dawes receives a hospital pass and got poleaxed (fairly) by M. Clayton.
While Dawes was on the ground J. Clayton went over and looked as though he kicked or kneed Dawes while he was on the ground. There was definate contact but the contact was on the blind side from my angle. It looked like a pretty gutless snipe to me as he went out of his way to do it.

Kudos to Colin Rowston for picking it up and awarding the free when Port were heading forward, and kudos to Ginevar for dragging Clayton off the field.
Was there a report?

I have the upmost respect for Jeremy a fantastic footballer but what he did was unneccessary.

DAWES was on the ground trying to recover from a hard and fair hit.
Jeremy came up and nudged his knee into Dawes side, the contact was slight
but not a smart and FAIR thing to do to a guy who is down for the count.

Even MOST of the staunchest and most verifocious PA supporters were silenced
and embarrassed by this act.

Hopefully Jeremy will apologise to Matty Dawes if the opportunity arises.

Anyways the reason why I bring this up is coz its a strange act to see from a Magarey medallist. Well, most Magarey medallists, Gary McIntosh wasnt exactly a saint, neither was Tony Antrobus. Clayton didnt have a great game so is he one to get easily frustrated?

Probably no different to what McIntosh did every game of his career.

What made this incident appear much worse was that Jeremy ran about 30 metres over to Dawes (and away from the play) to give it to him*. Definitely one of the worse acts I have seen on a footy field for a while - because it was so far behind the play.

I thought he was going to give it to Brian Leys (Port Runner) too as Leys had to basically drag him off the field!

Ive been saying since he came how much of a hot head he is. He actually calmed down a lot this year. Maybe thats why he isnt in the best of form. In his first year I saw him swear at everyone. Coach, supporters, teammates, trainers, waterboys, everyone.

Was one of the most idiotic things ive seen in a long time. In my opinion it was the turning point of the match.

Happened about 10m in front of me. Nothing in it. If it was so bad do you think only 1 Norwood player would go up to Jezza? And all he did was say something to Jezza flop like a soccer player when he got pushed.

No. Leys was just standing between Jezza and the Norwood flopper who was trying to act tough. Leys was stopping Jezza going at that clown.

Maybe because our players were focussed on being hard at the ball instead of sniping at people laying on the ground? Leys has obviously taught Clayton a few of his old tricks.

if the incident was as bad as you guys are saying mr clayton needs to be dealt with by the tribunal and not just get a slap on the wrist, stuff like you guys have described along with the skipworth incident in last years prelim have no place in our game yet the authorities in this state are loathe to stamp out cheap shots and acts of thuggery, not to mention the clubs who make a mockery of the so called salary cap - messsrs Payze and co are an absolute joke, prime candidates for top level afl posts when they become available!

Its not as bad as whats been said in here. Its not like he grabbed hold of Dawes head and thrust* his knee into his face. He just knocked him over thats all. Its just the fact it was 40 metres behind the play, Port had complete control of the play (almost certain goal) and the stupidity of it which is why it was bad.

Are you saying that J. Clayton likes to "take a man from behind"?

" His whiskers have curled."

Agreed. Just plain silly and he's too good a footballer to do things like that. From a Norwood perspective if Bown had have managed to kick the goal from the ensuing turnover it would have seen us go in at half time very, very upbeat.

I was also very surprised, and gratified mind you, when Clayton missed the kick late in the last quarter that would have put Port less than two goals down. Pretty sure we took it straight down the other end and scored a goal to effectively seal the game.

Thanks Jez.

Yeah just like that other Port player, David Clarke whos been reported about 4 or 5 times in 2 seasons, oh hang on he plays for South doesn't he.

Or that South Reserves player who was suspended for 2 games a few weeks ago for kneeing..

Whos instructions were Salisbury acting under when he tried to knock Greg Anderson's head off in 86, and his other numerous "gutless acts", likewise Alan Stringer.

Seriously, some people think that Port Adelaide is the only club that has ever had players who have ever done anything reportable in a game of SANFL footy. Interesting to compare the blood baths in the GF's from 85 to 87 with the 3 that were very tame when Port won from 88 to 90.

Geez GWW you like to bring up stuff from 20 years ago dont ya.

The thread is about one incident that happened on the weekend. You know May 26 2007. Not 1987.

Yes I know everyone's picking on Port Adelaide and everybody hates them. Take it as a compliment.

Point taken, but i DO get sick of listening to opposition supporters going on about how this is "typical" Port Adelaide thuggery when players in their own clubs have been just as guilty as like incidents. Kerley was just as bad as what Granger was, yet its always Granger thats referred to, and as i said McIntosh, whilst being a tough player, certainly always wasn't a "fair" one. He would have been guilty of several "gutless acts" over his career, yet its always Port incidents that are pointed out as though its a continuation of a tradition thats always been a typical Port Adelaide trait. I know you were only referring to this one incident but i admit i made reference to McIntosh because i was pre empting the abuse of Port Adelaide players that i knew was about to come along. And i'm not the only to have referred to past incidents either with mention made from someone else of the Granger incident, and someone going on about "gutless acts" continuing (South supporter).
