West v Centrals - Country Zones

Postby FlyingHigh » Sun May 27, 2007 3:35 pm

While I think it's a great initiative to play the occassional game in the country zones, a one-off game is going to pass by everyone except for those in the Riverland and West and Centrals fans.

How about playing one full round each year in the country zones, with appropriate promotion of course. South could keep their Easter Saturday game at Encounter Bay, which appears successful, meaning each of the other eight teams would play one game in their zone each second year. Thoughts?

One game will have to remain in the metro zone to satisfy the ABC contract. There's plenty of suitable venues for SANFL footy out there though.

1. Port Pirie -- they have two grounds, last I looked. One has night lighting and has hosted a North/Centrals night match before.
2. Clare -- the ground on the town's main drag last saw SANFL footy in '95, that being Centrals vs. Sturt.
3. Victor Harbor -- Encounter Bay Oval has been South's chosen country venue for two years running. 'Nuff said.
4. Whyalla -- Bennett Oval.
5. Berri -- Home of the Berri Demons FC. Seen the ground before, but not when a match has been played. That will change this weekend, I hear its more than adequate.
6. Loxton -- The Loxton North FC ground hosted West vs. Sturt a few years back.
7. Renmark -- Westies should have a third option, a match at Renmark's main footy ground could bring people across the border from nearby Mildura.
8. Port Lincoln -- Centenary Oval is a celebrated country venue, has hosted Power trial games so it must be good. That is if Big W doesn't screw it up.
9. Waikerie -- hasn't their main arena hosted SANFL before?
10. Murray Bridge -- not very far away from Adelaide. Imperials Oval, innit?
ARRIVE... RAISE HELL... LEAVE.

I would be more than happy to go watch the Bays play down Mt Gambier on a long weekend (Saturday of Easter???). Any good ovals down there suitable for SANFL level?

I'll put the results of the venues outside of Adelaide up again, rather than bumping the thread!

Is a good ground. Nice size and shape.

That would be Loxton FC. Loxton North play their games at Panther Park. But yes it did host a league game.

It wouldn't bring anyone from Mildura.

The population of the copper triangle swells to packed out when the Kernawick Lowender festival is on, good weekend for an SANFL game up there then!

Sure will.

Looks like I might have to work for a while during the game, but I'll be there.

Would love the SANFL to go out on a limb and actually play a game across the border, in our lovely Mildura! Most people here are closet South Aussies anyway and the most watched show on TV is the ABC replay of the SANFL game of the round on Tuesday nights!! *grins*
Spelly, putting up that chart of non-metropolitan games reminded me of the Port v Centrals game at Whyalla. That was the game where the goal umpire awarded Port the winning goal despite knowing that it hit the post. He said that it went through the goals and then blew back in to hit the post. A weird statement, particularly as the wind was going the other way. Still, strange things do happen in football!! *grins*

Spelly, not sure if you are missing a game on that list. I seem to remember going to a Central v North match in the Barossa one year - I think it was Nuriootpa but cannot remember for sure.

Would be great if the Eagles played a country game on the Yorke Peninsula some time. Have had plenty of players come from there.

Don't bring that game up Booney - might upset some of the old guard of Roosters fans.
Tragic night if my SANFL history serves me correctly.
