State Carnival 2008??

Whilst I am loathed to discuss anything AFL, I have a thought regarding the proposed carnival next year for State Footy.

Could the respective Leagues ( AFL, VFL, SANFL, WAFL, etc. ) come up with a combined carnival for a 2 week period next year, say in June/July ?

Proposal : 2 Divisions like the 'old days'.

Division 1: AFL State of Origin ( VIC, SA, WA, NT/Indiginous Team )

Division 2: State Leagues ( SANFL, VFL, Vic Country, WAFL, TAS, QLD (with AFL players), NSW (with AFL players ) & All-Australian Amateurs

Play the Carnival in 2 states; Division 1 in Victoria using MCG & Telstra Dome, Division 2 in SA using Adelaide Oval under Lights & some suburban grounds.

TV coverage could be split between 7 & 10 for Div 1 & ABC for Div 2.

Just a thought.

Any comments?

Like your thinking LEH. Hadn't thought of combining the two, but no reason why they shouldn't if they do decide to have a carnival type set up.

Good Idea

how many native Queenslanders in the AFL these days? could they support themselves in div 1 if a NT/Indigenous team can't get off the ground?

I like the idea, although if it's intended to be a state carnival, I don't think you should seperate the indigenous lads as a group

I would combine NT/Qld as a State of Origin side topped with NTFL & QAFL players and leave out the amateurs. Div 1- 4 teams, Div 2- 6 teams. Have it held every 2 years played as a round robin with relegation for the side finishing bottom in div 1 & promotion for the top side in div 2. AFL registered players would be ineligible to play in state league sides the same as it is now.

Like your idea LEH perhaps Fox might like the rights if free to air doesn't want them.
Be interesting to have night state games at Elizabeth and Norwood by then hopefully Woodville will have lights(hint to club and any sponsors)

I think the council won't allow night matches to be played at Woodville, the same goes for Unley. Thebarton lights should be upgraded.

Don't think you can have the SANFL/VFL/WAFL in a SOO carnival, goes against the concept of SOO

Unless you apply SOO rules to those comps ... ie, Gowans line up for VFL???

if you have a carnival I don't think it's good to have 2 SA State teams running around - SA has 1 SOO side and if some SANFL guys can make it, then great

Leave the other leagues to play each other as they do now. It's hard enough to get the AFL to sort this out on their own without trying to involve 3 other leagues :)

Also don't think you should segregate an indigenous team, doesn't really send the right message. Besides, do we want S Burgoyne to line up for NT/Ind or SA??
