They're SANFL league players and among the top 31 under-18 footballers in the state but Sam Fairclough, Levi Greenwood and Nick Wark have no guarantee of taking part in the NAB AFL national championships in July.

SA's best youngsters trained for the first time on Monday under Sturt premiership coach Brenton Phillips, who quickly drew a line on who would win a state jumper.

The former Essendon, Brisbane and North Adelaide wingman has four weeks to mould a team from a group of confident young men and only those who comply with his requirements will be part of SA's tilt at winning the Division I championships for the first time since 1995, when SA won the Teal Cup (U-17).

"We are not giving (state guernseys) away just because someone reckons he's got the talent to play state football," Phillips said. "You've got to earn that jumper."

The squad has trials against a mixed (league and reserves) Eagles team next Sunday (11.30am at Woodville), the SANFL under-20s (June 10, AAMI Stadium), NSW/ACT (June 16, Norwood) and mixed West Adelaide (June 23, Richmond).

The trials against older, harder bodies are designed to ready the Croweaters for highly physical outfits from WA and Victoria.

Fairclough, 17, 175cm, 75kg, is the most experienced of the trio at league level with 18 games and a 2006 premiership medal with the Eagles.

Phillips said he was prepared to add or subtract to the squad before deciding on the final 25.

SA u/18s were up by 3 or 4 goals when I was there, in the 3rd. Not a big crowd, maybe about 200.

Went to Woody Oval on Sunday to watch SA U18 v Composite WWT.

Final score U 18 17 . 12 d WWT 9 . 5

I believe that those U18 that were in the squad and played league on Sat. did not play, also some private school lads did not play.

U18 quite skilful and ran hard, were a lot more atheletic than WWT.
Matthew Wright (NA) kicked 6 goals. There appeared to be a lack of height in the SA team. Talking to some of the parents they said that those missing would not boost the lack of height.

Tim Inkster played for the Eagles - he was coming back from injury and showed his class as would be expected. Zack Hier at CHB was excellent and just missed out by 4 months in qualifying for the U18s. Young Christain Bock (brother of) at 199 cm showed excellent around the field positioning and some good skills for his height but at just 80 kg needs to put on a lot more beef. He has just turned 17 yo and could have a bright future.

It was a good hit out for the state team.

Excellent news re Inkster. A fit Inkster will be a massive boost heading in to the second half of the season. He was still awesome on one leg last year so hopefully the operation and break will be of benefit to him and the team. Same with Cicolella who has only played in our 3 losses so far.

I remembered why I rated Hier so highly watching him play his first league game of the season against South. Him and Salter, with a bit more experience from last year, make that back line look a lot stronger and/or give us a bit more flexibility with key position players given Pedler and Schwarze were in the ressies last game and Hall is injured.

Young Bocky played for WWT......Inkster, Heir, Lomas went off at 3/4 time and stayed off......Petrenko & Hicks played for the State 18s......there were a lot of talent scouts there watching......I thought Mathew Wright was outstanding....he went off in the third quarter injured but came back on for the last......young Tallen Leighton for WWT was an eye catcher also in teh first half......Sam Fairclough played for his school team the day before so was given the day off.....The state 18s played direct corridor football and converted very well on the number of forward 50 entries particularly in the 2nd and 4th quarters where they were very efficient......WWT was made up of U17, U19, Res & 4 League players
